Governor Christie has proposed a state budget that will eliminate the Urban Enterprise Zone program (UEZ). The UEZ allows Newark businesses to charge only 3.5% sales tax instead of the NJ State tax rate of 7%, and promotes the economic development that is so important to Newark. The revenue generated by the UEZ is redirected back to the municipality, in order to support business development activities that strengthen and enhance the economic environment of the city. In these tough economic times Governor Christie is proposing many cuts to address the staggering deficit that New Jersey is facing, and we have to have our voices heard to protect the programs that are providing economic benefits to the people who do business in Newark. Please sign this petition to express your support for the UEZ.
