Ask A&E to Counter Robertson's Anti-Gay Remarks With Supportive LGBT Programs

A&E responded responsibly to Phil Robertson’s nasty anti-gay remarks made during a magazine interview by suspending him from Duck Dynasty indefinitely. But maybe A&E can do more to help correct the misconceptions Robertson’s comments represent.

Robertson’s statements to GQ were excessively crude and disrespectful of not only the gay community but also of people of faith who support that community. Furthermore his comments are typical of those that misrepresent Biblical scripture, misconceptions that films like “For the Bible Tells Me So,” do a good job of challenging.

This award-winning film offers authoritative clarity to what Robertson claims is Biblical basis for his beliefs, and it offers those “caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity” healing and understanding.

This and similar programs can help correct the kind of distorted anti-gay thinking that Robertson’s remarks promote.

Ask A&E to counter Robertson’s anti-gay remarks with supportive LGBT programming.

We, the undersigned, believe A&E can use its influence to help correct the kind of anti-gay sentiment Phil Robertson’s remarks represent.

Although Robertson responded to critics by saying he “would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different,” from him, disrespectful may be the best way to characterize his comments - outside of just being downright ignorant.

Reports say GLADD has criticized Robertson’s remarks as being the “vilest and most extreme” voiced in a mainstream publication, adding that they are full of  “outdated stereotypes and blatant misinformation.”

GLADD works to support accurate, fair and diverse representations of LGBT people in the media, and Robertson’s comments provide A&E the perfect opportunity to work with organizations like GLADD to help bring about better understanding of the struggles the LGBT community faces.

We request that A&E counter Robertson’s remarks by adding programming that is supportive of the LGBT community.

Thanks for your time.
