Congress: Say "NO" to the Vitter Amendment!
Hunger programs shouldn't include punishments -- they should only serve to feed those that need assistance. However, this will be an issue if Congress doesn't change soon.
With an amendment to the Farm Bill, called the Vitter Amendment, anyone that has been charged with specific crimes will not be allowed to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, a program that gives 47 million people access to food stamps in the United States.
If the amendment passes, not only those convicted of the crimes, but also their family members and children will be punished, affecting 500,000 households. They will have $90 less a month to spend on food. It won't matter if the person hasn't committed a crime since, committed the crime when they were a child, or committed the crime decades ago.
Please tell Congress to get the Vitter Amendment out of the Farm Bill!
Dear United States Congress,
The Vitter Amendment, if included in the Farm Bill, would affect 500,000 households now receiving assistance to be able to eat. They, on average, would receive $90 less a month to spend on food.
This is because the Vitter Amendment would not allow those that have committed certain crimes to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, which right now gives 47 million people food stamps in the nation.
Not only will those that have committed the crimes be affected, but also their family members and children. It won't matter if these crimes were committed very long ago, when they were a child, or if they haven't broken any laws since.
Please do not pass the Vitter Amendment. Thank you for your time.
