The Outlaw of Selfies

A selfie is a self shot, usually taken on a mobile phone and posted online to social media sites. This began with the creation of Myspace in 2005. People would stress themselves of the perfect selfie for their “Myspace pic.” This was very popular until 2009 when Facebook was invented. Their design encouraged better quality photos, which in turn makes people want the perfect selfie. Also, in 2010 the Apple IPhone introduced the front facing camera which continued to encourage the selfie. But the worst contributor to the selfie was the creation of Instagram in 2011. Instagram introduced filters and hashtags to the public which made selfies soar. Eventually, ‘selfie’ was officially added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2013.
Social media has been the biggest contributor to the selfie. When a new trend pops up everyone competes to do it best. Trends such as ‘duck lips’ and ‘broken necks’ have soared among the population. People compete to do their selfie faces the best. These people have also put themselves in harm's way trying to get the perfect selfie. Celebrities and public officials have also hopped onto the selfie trend. Pope Francis was even added into this trend on August 28th, 2013 when he participated in a selfie with a teenager on a pilgrimage. This was deemed the first “Papal Selfie.” About 11% of celebrity posts on Instagram are selfies.
Although, people believe selfies to be fun and good memories. They believe it reflects on what they currently look like and are a great way to remember special moments. They continue to post these repulsive and dangerous looking photos that they think look great. People have posted selfies from high buildings, skydiving, and even weddings. These people believe it is a fun way to capture the moment.
Selfies have caused the population to lose interest in important things like politics, economics, and starvation. Yet, they focus more on how their makeup and hair look while they angle their face to slightly break their neck and to strain their lips until they look like a duck. With signing this petition you will be benefiting the human race and saving one more person from a broken neck.
