End all Retail Puppy Sales at Westfield Malls and California Pets Pet Stores in Escondido and Carlsbad, CA

Help Close Down Puppy Mills Forever

You should sign this petition to cause California Pets Pet Store to either change to a humane business model, and stop selling puppy mill puppies, or close down. You should sign this petition to compel their landlord, Westfield Malls in Escondido and Carlsbad, CA to require that they do so.

Westfield Mall leases space to California Pets, a retail pet shop that buys puppies from puppy mills. With this petition, we hope to show Westfield Mall that it is bad for business to continue to lease space to them. We hope to compel Westfield mall to require that California Pets offer adoptable animals from shelters only, and no longer sell animals. We hope that pressure from Westfield mall will cause California Pets to either change their business model or go out of business. We hope that as demand for retail puppies diminishes, puppy mills will go out of business completely.

California Pets not only supports the puppy mill industry, but also keeps the puppies in completely unacceptable conditions. On the day of my visit, there were over 50 puppies, some 2, 3 and 4 to a cage. All cages were far too small for the puppies in them. No natural light, no socialization, only a Lixit bottle for water, and no human contact except when they are fed, or their bedding changed. From the date of birth on the window stickers, these puppies are possibly being kept this way for months. Most of the stickers showed Missouri as the state of origin for the puppies. How are they transported? On huge trucks in tiny cages over days on the road at 8 weeks of age.

I introduced myself to the young woman at the register who explained she was the store manager. I asked if the puppies came from puppy mills, She stated to me they only buy from USDA licensed breeders and she named a few. This is double speak. Only puppy mills need to be USDA licensed.

I did a little research. One of California Pet's suppliers houses 875 adult dogs, according to an 8/2013 inspection report on the USDA website. Another keeps over 500. Here is an excerpt from one of many infractions noted on the USDA inspection report:

"There is a significant number of flies within the furnace room. Under one section of elevated animal enclosures, there is an accumulation of waste containing a large number of maggots. There are a total of 67 dogs located in the affected room. Failure to control pests can lead to disease hazards for the dogs." (emphasis mine)

Please help us eliminate retail animals sales forever. Please help us end the cruel puppy mill industry forever. Thank you
