Tell the USDA: No More Pink Slime in Burgers!

The infamous meat additive known as "pink slime" is making a comeback after bad publicity led manufacturers to stop using it. Now, rising beef prices are convincing food giants -- including the country's largest beef manufacturer, Beef Products, Inc. -- to give pink slime another shot.

Pink slime, or "lean finely textured beef," was first approved by the USDA in 2001, and is produced through using a centrifuge to separate meat from fat, then exposing the final product to ammonia and citric acid. An ABC News investigation found that prior to 2001, the product could only be found in dog food and cooking oil.

Research shows that exposure to pink slime's ammonia can cause long-term damage to the human digestive system, blood vessels, liver and kidneys.

Americans do not want this repulsive and damaging product in their food, but unfortunately, manufacturers are not required to disclose this additive on the label. Please sign the petition to put human health above agricultural interests and urge the USDA to either ban pink slime once and for all, or at least require labels to include it as an ingredient so that customers can avoid it if they choose.
