Replacement of the deteriorating 2nd Dyke Road culvert pipe being used as a bridge.

The culvert pipe that is being used as a bridge under the 2nd Dyke Road is in excess of 29 years old. The life expectancy was 20 years. The pipe is deteriorating and is presenting an eminent safety hazard to traffic as the pipe in rusting and sagging in the middle. It is also rusting excessively at the lake level, further evidence that failure of the pipe is eminent. We ask that you sign this petition to show your support for the replacement of this culvert pipe with a new structure. This will ensure the safety of all who use this road daily, including school buses and families who live on the lake.

While safety is our biggest concern, protecting the enviroment is also catamount in this cause. There is a sewer line than runs in the same direction as the roadway across this culvert pipe. Normal burial depth is 4' to 5' below finish grade. This sewer line is no more than 27" below finish grade. At this depth, the line could freeze and burst, causing raw sewage to be discharged into Burden Lake. This would be catastrophic to both the fish population and the property owners on the lake.
