Repair of Lyttelton Police Station, Centurion

  • by: David Farquharson
  • recipient: The Gauteng Police Commissioner and the Department of Public works

We the undersigned refer to the Lyttelton Police station and notice with concern:
• the state of the buildings:
• the reduction in number of police officers located at the station;
• the shortage of vehicles accessible to officers at the station;
• the lack of safe holding cells for prisoners;
• and the incomplete work being undertaken on the west side of the station.

We therefore request that the following be undertaken as a matter of urgency.
1. That a full structural integrity inspection to be carried out on all buildings making up the police station to ensure that the station is safe for police personnel and members of the public. This inspection should include exploratory dolomite drilling;
2. That if the area is found to be unsafe then “safe” land should be sourced and a new police station built. Any structurally safe buildings on the existing property should then be used as a satellite police station.
3. If the land is found to be “safe” then the reconstruction of the gate house, the holding cells and client service centre (charge office) should be completed as soon as possible.
4. We request that an investigation be undertaken into the reasons why the contractor constructing a new entrance gate work has not been completed and appropriate follow up action be undertaken;
5. We request that the staffing transfer committee urgently fill the plus minus ten per cent of vacancies that exist at the station;
6. Since the station has been downgraded from a Brigadier/ Director level station to a Colonel level station with a corresponding decrease in the number of allocated personnel, we request that the decision to downgrade the station be reviewed as the station covers a large geographic area and has similar crime statistics to the smaller Sunnyside station area, which is classed as a Director level Station;
7. We note that the Lyttelton Police station is responsible for a large area and had eight sectors with community service vehicles for each sector and have recently been reduced to four vehicles. We request that this decision be over turned and extra vehicles be allocated to the police station. This is further justified by the fact that the station has no “safe” holding cells and therefore requires additional vehicles to transport detained persons to other police stations.
8. We further request that the delays in police vehicle maintenance be investigated and addressed.
