Please sign to: 1- Stop the Grumman/Navy Plume from entering the water supplies of over 255,000 South Shore Long Island residents, including Farmingdale, Massapequa, Plainedge, Seaford, Wantagh, Amityville and potentially others, as well as heading to the Great South Bay;  2-Demand additional soil testing and air quality testing for residents residing on the Grumman/Navy Plume;  3-Have the Grumman/Navy Plume classified as Superfund site under the EPA (right now it is only listed under NYS DEC);  and 4-Request NYS to do a more comprehensive Cancer & Other Diseases Study of the entire Bethpage School District.

Dear NYS DEC, EPA, Governor Cuomo & the NYS DOH:

We urge you to take the following measures with regard to the Grumman/Navy toxic plumes located in Bethpage, New York.

1.      We are demanding a full clean up of the plume so that water districts down-gradient does not have to contend with significant pollution into their water supplies.  This plume has the potential to enter the water supplies of over 255,000 South Shore residents on Long Island (including Plainedge, North Massapequa, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Seaford, Wantagh, Amityville), as well as the potential to dump into the Great South Bay if not stopped thus polluting our waters and having an adverse effect on fishing, wildlife, and recreation.

2.      There should be additional soil testing and air quality testing in residential neighborhoods and well as on schools and parks located on top of the plume.

3.      There should be a Cancer and Other Diseases Study done of entire school district of Bethpage.  The previous cancer study conducted by the New York State Department of Health includes a very limited section of Bethpage and excluded residents that have moved, as well as those residents that are deceased.  We want a study conducted of the entire school district as the majority of residents in Bethpage attend Bethpage High School, use the Bethpage Community Park for recreation and have used the Community Park for recreation for decades both sites located on or across the street from the starting point of the large toxic plume.

4.      The Grumman/Navy plume should be classified as a “Superfund” site under the Environmental Protection Agency.  At present, this plume is only classified as “Superfund” site under the NYS Department of Conservation.  Since this plume has: significant toxins; the potential to enter the water supplies of over 255,000 South Shore residents on Long Island (including Plainedge, North Massapequa, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Seaford, Wantagh, Amityville); the potential to dump into the Great South Bay if not stopped it will pollute our waters and have an adverse effect on fishing, wildlife, and recreation; and is co-mingled with the Hooker Chemical/Ruco Polymer site which is a Superfund site with the EPA, we strongly urge that this site be classified as “Superfund” site under the EPA.
