Demand to Remove Larry Thomason from Rowan County Hall of Fame

    Yesterday I went to Halls Gym to play volleyball with some family members and close friends! While there, I read the “Rowan County Hall of Fame” honorees and I had a very haunting experience when I saw the name “Larry Thomason”
    Larry Thomason was my high school football coach at North Rowan high school and I think is worth noting that he was also my Geometry Teacher.
    To make this story shorter, I will just cut to the chase;
    During my first semester at Winston Salem State University, I decided to go to North Rowan’s homecoming game. As I approached the gate to pay, Coach Ralph Shatterly, our defensive back coach asked me if he could have a word with me and I agreed.
    Coach Shatterly told me that he was recently in the hospital and the doctors didn’t think his condition would improve, so they would do what they could to make him comfortable. He told me that while laying in the hospital waiting for his fate, he prayed and asked God to allow him to apologize for some of the bad deeds that he was a part of in his life. And according to him, one of the worst deeds he had been party to was withholding college recruitment letters that was apparently sent to the North Rowan, but intended for me.
    According to Coach Shatterly, Larry Thomason refused to inform me about the letters and the many visits from Clemson University’s football coaching staff, who were interested in me. Coach Shatterly also said that Larry threatened to fire may coach who told me about the letters or visits.
    I honestly can’t say that I’m surprised about the conduct of Larry Thomason, but I was surprised to see that he was being honored as a Hall of Famer in any manner.
    When Coach Shatterly told me about this incident and how badly he felt, I couldn’t help but think, How many other lives did Larry and the likes of him play with?
