Bring Back Live Music to The Washington Ballet%u2019s The Nutcracker

by: The Washington Ballet has used live music in productions of The Nutcracker for over 30 years; current ballet administration has presented the work with canned music, depriving local musicians of work, Washington audiences of ballet danced to live music, and children of their first exposure to live classical music.

We the Undersigned call on the Board of Directors to evaluate the decision to used recorded music for performances of The Nutcracker.

As reviews of recent ballet performances by The Washington Ballet at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC confirm, dancing to recorded music destroys the dynamism and disrupts the drama of the ballet production. Young children, typically not taken to orchestra concerts or opera performances, are losing their initial exposure to live classical music.

Washington merits and needs live music for its ballet. Please restore the commitment to presenting live ballet with live music.
