Montenegro is a country which is attracting some of the worlds wealthiest people at places like Porto Montenegro in Tivat and Sveti Stefan. It is a country that boasts of its being Europe's first Ecological and Green country, yet it is quietly using a highly toxic EU banned poison called Lannate (produced by the American company DuPont) to kill street dogs and cats. It is a poison which causes a horrendous death taking anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours. In 2008, a man in Trinidad killed his son by giving him a drink laced with Lannate. Local media reported that the victim suffered "a death too painful to describe". I also watched as my beloved dog die in front of me after eating a piece of chicken meat that was laced with Lannate. Her suffering was horrible. She looked at me with eyes that wanted help, but there was nothing that I could do. The look in here eyes will haunt me forever.
Celebration of the news that EU lawmakers had enforced the banning of Lannate from March 2009 was perhaps premature.
Over 200 dogs have been killed in the last week alone in Bar, a sea side town on the Adriatic, and many were loved pets like my own wonderful dog. These mass poisonings are not limited to Bar. They are occurring all over the country in places like Budva, Kotor and the capital, Podgorica. The poison is being mixed with food and placed in the streets and in parks. All it would take is for a toddler to walk by and pick up a blade of grass or a flower with the poison on it to die. Every living organism is threatened by this poison and one can visibly see the effects on bird life.
The citizens of Bar have been asking for a proper animal shelter for years and the implementation of a spay/neuter campaign but their voices fall onto deaf ears. Please sign and help us end the murdering campaign and to implement a ban of Lannate!
We are a group of concerned Europeans and Americans who either live in Montenegro, visited Montenegro or read about it. It has come to our attention the atrocities being committed against dogs and cats and the danger tourists are being exposed to. The voices of your citizens are not being heard. You promised an animal shelter in your town years ago yet you have done nothing except spread Lannate everywhere. Lannate, is a deadly chemical that is being misused, a chemical banned by the European Union. You have laws to protect animals but none are implemented. Your citizens have asked for a spay and neuter campaign to prevent the suffering of the pups and kittens being born, and once again you do not care. All sentient beings have an innate right to die with respect and you continue to violate this. Until we see some changes in the right direction we will commence with an online media blitz that lets every prospective tourist know about the dangers of Montenegro and its treatment of animals. Every major newspaper will also be contacted. Please consider the requests of your people and take some action. Thank you
