Stop whaling for good!

Despite the devastating Earthquake and Tsunami that has hit Japan, three boats have left the port of Kushiro, Hokkaido. They have resumed what the government calls research whaling.

An international moratorium on commercial whaling was passed in 1986, yet the number of whales that have been slaughtered by harpoons steadily grows. Japan, Iceland and Norway continue to kill even though the world has asked them to stop. Whales are killed by Japan under their guise of "scientific research," while Iceland and Norway maintain objections to the moratorium and hunt commercially.

According to the CCGL (Cetacean Conservation and Genetic Laboratory) at the University of Oregon, DNA testing has revealed commercial products produced from both scientific research and bycatch.  In 1993, Scott Baker and Steve Palumbi (now at Stanford University) and Earthtrust, initiated a program of "molecular monitoring" to identify the species of whales and dolphins sold in these commercial markets. Products are legally sold in South Korea and Japan. Nearly 2,000 products from at least 28 species of cetaceans including seven species (or sub-species) of protected Baleen Whales: the Humpback, Western Gray, Fin, Blue/Fin hybrids, Sei, and Bryde's Whales. Research to aid in observation and inspection of this matter has been funded by grants from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).  Please help insure that the International Whaling Commission regulates DNA monitoring and a DNA "registry" of all hunted whales, to help in the verification of commercial products sold from illegal whaling .  Remember that the job of the IWC, their duty, is to govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world.

At last years IWC meeting, Japanese representatives were caught on film making deals with other countries behind closed doors. Japan denies buying IWC votes, some of these other countries have openly admitted that Japanese officials recruited them to the meetings, and that Japan has given them cash payments in envelopes at these IWC meetings. Japanese officials pay their travel and hotel bills, and offer them financial aid. A senior fisheries official for the Marshall Islands said: "We support Japan because of what they give us."  In addition, the IWC commissioner for Tanzania said "good girls" were made available at the hotels for ministers and senior fisheries civil servants during all-expenses paid trips to Japan. Please stand firm against the barbaric, unnecessary slaughter of innocent Whales - and Dolphins- and stand firm against bribery of smaller nations.

There has been a substantial amount of scientific evidence that All Ocean Life is connected to our well being. Please do not turn the other way and ignore this any longer. Please hear our call for action to protect Our Ocean and the innocent creatures that live within it. If we continue to allow the mass slaughter of any creature, what does it say about us?

The world is again asking you to help put an End to the slaughter - Now before it is too late.
