Last year over 100 thousand petitioned Walmart to label any GMO sweet corn it puts on its produce shelves. But so far Walmart has refused to commit.
According to Food & Water Watch, genetically engineered corn is regulated by the EPA just like an insecticide because it actually produces pesticides in its own tissues. Now that this GMO corn is on the market, much of the public is blindly consuming a pesticide, because the major supermarkets, including Walmart, are not telling us which corn is GMO and which is the real thing - and there’s really no way to be sure by looking at it.
However, it’s not hard to guess that Monsanto created this frankenfood. Both it and the supermarkets that sell the corn have an obligation to label it with a big GMO sticker, so consumers will know when they’re buying real corn or a pesticide that just looks like corn.
Walmart and other supermarkets should not even be selling this poisoned food in the first place. But at the very least, we insist that Walmart label any GMO corn it does sell.
We, the undersigned, say Walmart and Monsanto have an obligation to inform consumers about genetically altered foods.
It should be a no-brainer that everyone has the right to know when they’re consuming any food classified as a pesticide.
Failing to label these altered foods is especially disturbing when you consider that they have not been appropriately tested for their short-term, much less long term, effects on humans and the environment.
We already know about the havoc Monsanto has created with its excessive use of Roundup on its genetically-modified Roundup-ready crops. But proof of that has taken years to surface. However we do know that one of the major causes of childhood leukemia is pesticide exposure. Therefore it makes no sense to even risk the effects consuming GMO corn may have on children - and how it could adversely affect their entire lives - not to mention the environment, other humans and animals.
Walmart has the purchasing power to reject this poisoned corn and protect its customers. But the least it can do is label any GMO corn it puts on its shelves. We have requested this in the past, and Walmart has failed to take proper action.
Now we insist that we will buy no corn at all from Walmart until it either rejects or labels all GMO sweet corn.
