Amend the Tardy Table Policy at Weeki Wachee High School

This rule hinders our ability to attend our classes, and that is unacceptable in a learning establishment. The sending of people to the tardy table even if they were literally about to open the door to class when the bell rings needs to stop, and the only way to stop this is to make it known to administration how this rule hurts more than it helps.

The Tardy Policy at the aforementioned institution, while it was made with good intentions, is inadvertantly causing great discontent among the student body. We realize that the focus of the statute was to prevent the amount of students commiting on-campus truancy during instruction, but the manner of which the rule was created failed to account for many other factors that affect students. Staff repeatedly state that 4 minutes is enough to get from one end of campus to the other, and thats true, if the school is empty. With the immense amount of students which are enrolled here, the traffic in the corridors during passing makes it difficult to reach your next period in that amount of time. Running is meant for Track and Field, not in between passing. Four minutes would be fine normally, but the main dilemma is that the rule is much too excessive. Students who deliberately defy the rules and come into class many minutes late are legitemately tardy, but a Student who walked at a normal speed, did not "Dilly Dally" during their journey, and is literally within yards of the class they are about to enter shouldn't have to be punished. There is no reason that student should be forced to miss those crucial first minutes of class just to get a piece of paper. Then when they finally get back to class, that forces the teachers to have to repeat what the child missed. This whole process creates an inconvienence for both student and teacher, and literally defeats the purpose of being at school to learn if you get sent away because of irrational reasons. We need a Tardy policy which is well planned and effectively prevents actual people skipping without also punishing innocent students who just didnt walk fast enough. Also, teachers tell us to use the bathroom during passing so they dont miss class, but with this rule using the restroom during passing is pretty much an automatic tardy. Frankly, everyone knows the rule is ridiculous, but nothing has changed. Officials keep saying how much the percentage of skipping has gone down, but I wonder how high the percentages of tardies have skyrocketed. Its time we need to be heard, because the school needs to realize how counterproductive it is. If they give us just a minute of leeway after the bell rings along with teacher discretion, it would drastically decrease the amount of tardies because most of them are sent to the table for being within seconds of entering the room. It wouldnt harm the schedule in any way, and it wouldn't interfere with efforts preventing people from skipping, so there is no way it could do anything but help.

Update #27 years ago
Hey guys, today I was summoned by Mr.Lebarbara and Mrs.Chapin. They were extremely nice and they understand our problem, but they asked me to please take it down because it's just adding onto all the other things that they have to deal with this chaotic school year. Mr.L said that he understands our message, but he said that a petition wouldn't change anything because the district would ignore it
