The Laurel Canyon Association has received many complaints about cross-canyon commuter traffic — made worse by wayfinding apps, like WAZE.
Recently around the beginning of rush hour, there was a horrendous accident in Laurel Canyon caused by what appeared to be yet another speeding car on a narrow, curving road.
It isn’t affecting just Laurel Canyon. The problem with shortcutting to avoid congested Laurel Canyon Boulevard is also affecting Nichols Canyon, streets in the Dona’s, Mt. Olympus, Sunset Plaza, Lookout and Laurel Pass. What were once peaceful neighborhood streets have become de facto highways — without the approval of LADOT. This will affect our property values, and is affecting our quality of life.
Our residential access streets are NOT HIGHWAYS.
SO, WHAT CAN WE DO? LCA HAS A PLAN.
1) To join with Councilman Kerkorian in demanding that WAZE and other wayfinding apps alter their programming to avoid substandard and/or “local access only” streets when plotting cross-town commuting routes. Kerkorian is using the City’s relationship with WAZE to improve the app. We agree.
2) To demand that the Mayor, the City Council and LADOT regain control over traffic management. We pay taxes to the City, not to WAZE, to manage traffic in Los Angeles. The City needs to do its job!
3) To require the City to acknowledge the increased traffic and install traffic control measures, including speed bumps, LED lit stop signs, repainted crosswalks, speed monitoring signs, and increased traffic enforcement.
I support Laurel Canyon Association's efforts to mitigate the impacts of WAZE and other wayfinding apps. I petition:
