Demand to Prevent Rapists' from Suing their Victims for Custody of a Child

  • by: Ava Sasani

In many parts of the United States, rape victims are not guaranteed the right to terminate their attacker's parental rights. Of the 32,000 women in the nation who conceive a child through rape annually, about a third choose to keep the child. These women often face long, painful, drawn-out custody battles with their rapist simply to retain custody of the child they chose to keep.
Constitutionally, state legislatures have to pass laws protecting the custody rights of rape victims. The Rape Survivor Custody Act is a federal bill that would incentivize state governments into passing appropriate legislature, and although the bill had bipartisan support (from both pro-life and pro-choice advocates) the bill didn't even receive a hearing.
We as the public must rally behind these brave women trying to protect their children by demonstrating a broad left-right coalition of support and pressuring lawmakers to fulfill their basic duties. Please support this petition to pressure both Congress and state legislators to protect the custody rights of rape victims.
