Rethink Chick-Fil-A at LHU!

To whom it may concern,

We are contacting you because we would like to express our feelings about the recent announcement that Lock Haven University will have a Chick-Fil-A in Lower Bentley, starting in fall 2015.

We feel that Chick-Fil-A holds a hateful sentiment that is not in congruence with the practices and values of Lock Haven University. We also feel that the opinions of the students, the LGBTQ community, and our allies have been neglected in the decision making process.

For many years, Chick-Fil-A has been funneling money towards anti-LGBT programs through their sister foundation, WinShape. Not only have the owners of Chick-Fil-A been very verbal in their opinions of the LGBTQ community, but they have also been funding programs that discriminate and/or directly harm the members of this population.

For example, the owners of Chick-Fil-A have verbally and monetarily supported the practice of “conversion therapy.” Conversion therapy is a practice that aims to change an individual’s sexuality or gender identity, often times using unethical interventions. The practice is widely denounced by professional organizations, such as the American Psychiatric Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy for being an ill-informed, baseless, and detrimental. These respected organizations have released statements against the practice of conversion therapy due to its roots in the unscientific myth that homosexuality is a disease that can be cured. Conversion therapy has been found to have excruciatingly detrimental effects on individuals who are often forced to engage in the practice. By supporting Chick-Fil-A, the university is assisting the organization in funding an unethical practice that is based in the belief that homosexuality is a disorder and goes against modern research.

We also feel that the student population was wrongfully neglected during the decision making process to bring the Chick-Fil-A to campus. We feel that students were kept in the dark about the efforts to bring another food service to the University. As students and the primary consumers of these services, we feel that this was a very big decision that should have included student representation. The decision and decision making process makes us feel that students don’t have a voice on campus, when it comes to major decisions. The incident also gives us fear that we will not have representation in other major decisions to come.

It is with this that we present you with the following petition. The petition includes the names of Lock Haven University students, faculty, and staff who feel that:
1. Chick-Fil-A and WinShape engage in practices that are not align with the values and practices of Lock Haven University.
2. The student population was wrongfully, neglected from the decision making process.

We ask that you rethink your decision to bring a Chick-Fil-A to our campus on the basis of our argument. We will continue to raise awareness about the issues at hand, in hopes that students will boycott the organization and protest their presence on our campus.

If you are a student, please provide your student ID number in the "additional comments" section of the petition.
