Tell Tulane we have the right to smoke safely on our own campus

UPDATE: Thank you for the signatures and the great points you've made against the ban. Please keep this going!

The student government groups, elected to represent ALL students on campus, along with the Tulane administration, have voted to effectively ban all smoking on campus by 2014. Smoking on campus has already been confined to designated spots on campus, understandably, to prevent the annoyance and dangers of second hand smoke to those who choose not to smoke.

This petition is designed to make known to these student groups and admistration that as adults, we have the choice to partake in legal activities in the comfort and safety of the campus we pay handsomely to call home. One only has to check WaveMail's crime alerts to see that the side streets surrounding campus are not the safest places for students to have to smoke.

This is not a matter of whether smoking is unhealthy, immoral, or just plain stupid. This is a matter of individual rights. If you've ever smoked a cigar after a drunken night at the Boot, lit a cig after a stressful week of studying, or met new friends around a hookah pipe, sign this petition telling Tulane that we have a voice and we will be heard. If you have friends and classmates who smoke, who you wouldn't want walking off campus at night to smoke, sign this petition. Even if you don't smoke, sign if you feel Tulane is crossing a line in banning a legal activity enjoyed by many.
