Accused of masterminding one of the most brutal campaigns of Genocide in our recent history he still travels unfettered, and worse, undeterred by his arrest warrants, he continues his crimes with impunity, expanding his bombing and attacks against civilians beyond Darfur to those in the Sudanese states of Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is directly responsible for the deaths of over 300 000 men, woman and children in Darfur alone. He is responsible for the displacement of 3000 000 Darfuris, creating a humanitarian crises beyond imagination in Sudan.
Yet charges of Genocide, war crimes and Crimes against humanity have not deterred him from getting invites from countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia - and his arrogance, and a lack of political will has enabled him to accept without fear of arrest.
India is the latest country to extend a hand of welcome to this monster, and with two ICC arrest warrants floating above his head, we cannot comprehend why. India is also not part of the ICC, so they are not obliged to arrest him. But the But the United Nations Security Council has urged every country to cooperate with the Darfur cases, and so we must to.
A visit from Bashir can do no good for India’s international reputation, but rescinding the invitation will confirm their good standing in the international community.
But beyond India’s reputation, stand the fact that the murderer of hundreds of thousands continues to travel almost as he wishes - this must stop. The international community must stand up and make our voices head. Not hindered by political red tape we can shout until we are heard, and headed.
