Tell Congress - Hands Off Our Kids' Education

  • by: Loron Hays

According to a recent report from Education Week, The House Appropriations Committee has unleashed a devastating plan that will cripple the U.S. Department of Education and limit the potential of America's youth for years to come.  In their sights are 19 essential programs, including Advanced Placement funding, Transition to Teaching resources, and Art programs

As an educator for the past 13 years, I can tell you that the programs in their targets make lasting and meaningful impacts on students.  I have witnessed 15-year-old girls find their voice through art classes and there have been several 17-year-olds who awakened their own passions for writing and reading in the AP Lang classes I taught.

The GOP's message to the American public speaks volumes in how far they are willing to go to avoid honoring President Obama's proposed budget, which includes boosts for the School Improvement Grant program, preschool development grants, civil rights enforcement, and education technology.

Together, you and I can send a message to House GOP members. American citizens do not tolerate any spending proposal that does not provide a sizable increase for the U.S. Department of Education. Our kids matter, and we won't let politicians shortchange their collective future for political gains.

Stop this maddening war on education by signing the petition today!

Update #18 years ago
Right now, the US House and Senate are working to reconcile their versions of America’s bedrock education law. The House has passed awful cuts, and the Senate has approved a re-write of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that rolls back provisions that help children in poverty, kids with disabilities, and other under-served students. We can still make a difference for kids — please take action on this new petition right now.
