Rural, indigenous communities in Guatemala receive little or no healthcare services from the government. Hospitals are located at least two hours away by public transportation; they are very expensive and many times discriminate against indigenous patients. Maya midwives are sometimes the only health care option in the marginalized areas. Their knowledge of preventative medicine, especially with the use of medicinal herbs, can lower the chances that the members of their community will get sick and have to visit a hospital.
about this gift
This gift of seeds will contribute to the planting of a medicinal herb garden of a Maya midwife in the Highlands of Guatemala. She uses medicinal herbs in various methods of preventative medicine, treating pregnant women and other members of her community. Her methods can prevent common sicknesses, such as intestinal infections, cramps, the common-cold, parasites, and skin infections. These techniques are inexpensive; the patient will not have to take antibiotics or travel long distance to a hospital.
