Call on Blatter to Resign from FIFA

Sign this petition to demand the resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter before his reelection, for his role in corruption, human rights violations, and gross mismanagement of the organization.

Top officials with FIFA have been indicted on charges including fraud and racketeering. The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI say this is just the beginning – According to a New York Times report, the investigation uncovered bribery and money laundering schemes that influenced the association's elections, marketing deals and who would host the 2010 World Cup.

Fourteen people have been charged, with one official alone taking $10 million in bribes. The indictment says that several international soccer events were tainted by this scandal.

Although more arrests are expected, FIFA's president Sepp Blatter has so far avoided indictment. FIFA's communications chief claims the president wasn't involved in the crimes, but this widespread corruption happened under his watch.

In addition to the immense proportions of this scandal, Blatter has made other terrible choices, such as suggesting women’s soccer would be improved by shorter shorts and ignoring the de facto imprisonment of immigrant laborers in Qatar whose passports are confiscated and whose rights are non-existent.

Blatter is expected to be re-elected for a fifth term on Friday. Demand that Blatter resign and FIFA oppose his re-election!

We, the undersigned, say it is inappropriate to re-elect Blatter in the wake of this enormous scandal - that his re-election should at least be postponed until the investigation is completed.

The New York Times reports that IRS, Justice Department and FBI investigators describe this scandal “in terms normally reserved for Mafia families and drug cartels.”

The indictment claims members of FIFA’s executive committee took huge amounts in bribes from South Africa’s bid committee seeking to host the 2010 World Cup. Others involved in the sport’s broadcasting profited by allegedly laundering money received from the bribes.

Mr. Warner, who has since resigned, has also been accused of taking bribes from an “unnamed co-conspirator” seeking election to the presidency and of withholding bonuses from players and profiting from the illegal resale of tickets to the 2006 World Cup.

Given the proportions of this scandal and criticisms of FIFA’s long history of poor transparency and lack of oversight, it would be inappropriate to re-elect Blatter before this investigation is complete.

We request that FIFA oppose Blatter’s re-election and that the president resign.

Update #18 years ago
