STOP THE K56 DESTROYING WILDLIFE AND WETLANDS IN JOHANNESBURG

A major road is proposed in irreplaceable conservation sites to serve developments outside the area.  This will destroy major wetlands, habitat for birds, small animals, and the endangered African Bullfrog.  If this road is not opposed, the rural nature of the area and the valuable equestrian industry will be lost affecting thousands of jobs provided in the area and within a few years this area will be just another built up area of town houses, shops and businesses.

This road will decimate the wetlands, and the small mammals that live here for example, Black Back Jackal, mongoose, genet, porcupine, bullfrogs, terrapins, tortoises and other reptiles and birds.

On the 19th April 2012 yet another black backed jackal was killed on a major road near this targeted area. This mindless  slaughter will become a daily occurrence if this road is built.

This area is also home to one of the largest equestrian industries in the southern hemisphere.  It provides a massive amount of employment - thousands of horse grooms who have no other skills work and live in this area supporting their family members.  Stable erectors, paddock and arena builders, farriers and a substantial number of vets, the Lipizzaner Centre, the Gauteng horse society, riding schools, feed merchants and saddlery shops and all their employees are all under threat!
Help save Kyalami and its neighbouring areas.

Stop the bullying tactics of greedy developers:  Stand up for your rights!  How much concrete does it take before we lose our humanity?   We have all been impacted by uncontrolled development and despite public participation we continue to be ignored!

The proposed road goes right through the middle of the Greater Kyalami Conservancy to service the construction projects of Steyn City and Helderfontein Estate who will fund the road as their bulk services contribution to the City of Johannesburg.

Many residents in this area will lose their homes and/or portions of their properties and Cedarwood School will be destroyed. The area is home to one of the largest equestrian industries in the world providing a massive amount of employment. They will have to move as no right thinking horse rider would ride next to a major road with fast moving traffic.   The Gauteng Horse society and Lipizzaner Centre are located here.  This road will certainly decimate the wetlands, and the small mammals that live here for example, Black Back Jackal, mongoose, genet, porcupine, bullfrogs, terrapins, tortoises and other reptiles and birds.  On the 19th April 2012 yet another black backed jackal was killed on a major road near this targeted area. This mindless slaughter will become a daily occurrence if this road is built.Don’t let one of the last remaining open spaces in Johannesburg be destroyed.  Tell the municipal and provincial authorities the time for mindless destruction and poor planning is over.
