We have been trying to get the Port Jervis school district to change their policy. New York State allows ,with the BOE 'S approval ,all homes schooled students the right to participate in clubs. Since April of 2008 Many pros and cons were debated. The children come from taxpaying homes. They would follow the same rules for behavior. The insurance to add them is minimal. Most of the clubs have low attendance. The meeting will be August 21, 2008 at 7:30 . The location is set at the town building in Huguenot. Due to repairing the school. I will be there and need your support. I am a 16 year old home schooled student. After carefully exploring the N.Y.S. law, I realized this would be beneficial for me to participate in clubs such as: Scholastic bowl, Mock trial, Chess club. Would you please support me by signing this petition. Thank you- C.J. Phillips

it is only right that all our children are given equal rights. New York State law allows this. Please allow children of all tax payers, not just some, the enrichment of school clubs.

Weather your home schooled or not your still a tax payer and should be able to enjoy the same clubs as any one else does

This issue speaks for itself. At least it should. Almost all homeschoolers' Parent's pay taxes just like everyone else. Why shouldn't our children who are saving the district money by not attending school, be able to utilize the system for the education of "our children" when need be. Sharon Mcguinness

Public schools are here to serve ALL children in our community. Read the mission statement. You specifically state, " The Port Jervis City School District is committed to measurably improve the academic performance of ALL students and provide opportunities for students to reach their fullest potential." If you don't let the home-school kids join, you are hypocrites.

Having known C J for a number of years as his Youth Group Leader, Sunday
School Teacher and many family activities over the years, it has been a
pleasure to have him participate in every activity. He has great leadership potential and is an inspiration to young and old who know him. Lastly he will be an asset to every endeavor he's involved in.

It seems logical to allow all taxpayers to participate. I am not sure what the downside is? There will most likely be very few who will actually participate so it seem that there would be little impact

Those who choose to homeschool still pay school taxes, which hardly seems fair in the first place. To deny homeschoolers access to school-tax-supported activities is wrong.

Knowing CJ as I do, if permitted to participate in clubs, he will set the standard for others. As a Pa. taxpayer, I am glad to see both the public school students and the home schooled students get the benefit of a different perspective.

If a home schooled student's parents pay school taxes there is absolutely no reason why they can't participate in after school activities.

If there is no law against it, why doesn't the school allow it?

C.J.Phillips is an intelligent and responsible young man who has already overcome many serious medical issues. He is a home schooler and very capable and deserving to be involved in these public school clubs. Home schooled students deserve every opportunity that public schooled children to. Gov. Rendel in Pa. already signed a bill that in Pa. home schooled children can participate in extra curricula activities in the schools. Why not New York?

As a fellow tax payer, homeschool mom, and resident of Port Jervis, I agree that homeschool children should be permitted to attend club and have access to school equipment that is allowed by State law. It is very sad that a stones throw away in PA, this is allowed and done quite well. Many homeschool families have a great rapport with the DV School and do a great many activities with no problem.

Taxpayers should be permitted to decide to what degree their children should be involved in any community and public services available to any other child in their district. I believe this right should be extended not just to clubs but to include school books and special presentations as well. As homeschool families we pay the same taxes as any other family and ask little from the system in return! Perhaps it's time we ask for a bit more and maybe as a result of this increased involvement....the school district might find that our homeschool families have even more to offer our community than just our hard earned tax dollars!

Not all children are home schooled because they want too but due to medical conditions makes impossible for them to attend school with their peers. Difficult treatments, low counts force them out of normal schools so if they can take part in a club, a sport or model united nation type activity it will make their lives so much more liveable. No one would wish a brain tumor on anyones child so making their lives more difficult by excluding them from an activity that they would enjoy is criminal.
