SOS: HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTION NEEDED TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF LIVES
The war between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers are drawing to a bitter end. However, the fate of the civilians in the government designated safe zone, ironically now the war zone, is of grave concern to us. Reports from both the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government indicate the fighting still continue within a less than one square kilometer patch of land in Mullivaikal, northern Sri Lanka. The sources from within the war zone claim there are at least 25,000 civilians still trapped in this small area.
The civilians have been put to bear the brunt of this war. First four months of this year alone more than 7,000 civilians were killed. In the last 48 hours, more than 3,000 are feared killed. The Tamil Tigers have now publicly announced that they have decided to lay down their arms and conclude their struggle through political dialogue. This is the first time ever the LTTE had given this assurance. Unfortunately, the Sri Lankan armed forces have not yet responded positively. On the contrary, it has not called off the military offensive operation in this civilian safe zone.
Right to life is foremost among human and individual rights, even under war situations. Given the total disregard to the plight of civilians exhibited in this conflict, we strongly believe, however belated, only a humanitarian intervention can ensure the safety of the remaining civilians. In this petition, we are making specific appeal to the US , UK and the UN to step up and intervene immediately.

SOS: IMMEDIATE RESCUE OPERATION NEEDED TO SAVE 25,000 LIVES
CURRENT SITUATION IN SRI LANKAN IS NOTHING BUT CATASTROPHE. THOUSANDS KILLED IN THE LAST 24 HOURS. 25,000 CIVILIANS HUNKERED DOWN IN BUNKERS FOR MORE THAN A WEEK WITHOUT WATER AND FOOD AND MEDICAL CARE FOR THE WOUNDED.
THE LTTE HAS HEEDED TO PRESIDENT OBAMA, PRIME MINISTER BROWN, AND OTHER WORLD LEADERS AND NOW HAS DECIDED TO SILENCE THEIR GUNS TO ALLOW FOR CIVILIANS TO BE RESCUED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY FROM THE %u201CSAFE ZONE%u201D WHERE THE SRI LANKAN MILITARY IS CONDUCTING A FULL SCALE OFFENSIVE OPERATION. TODAY'S PUBLIC REQUEST FROM LTTE TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO INTERVENE IS CLEAR AND DIRECT.
LTTE HAS RESPONDED TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AND DECIDED TO LAY DOWN THEIR ARMS IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE LAST REMAINING EXCUSE FOR THIS CARNAGE BY SRI LANKA, NOW THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST ACT DECISIVELY AND URGENTLY FOR THE PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS.
25,000 LIVES ARE HANGING IN THE BALANCE AND IN HOURS WILL EITHER BE DEAD OR ALIVE DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE US, UK, FRANCE, INDIA AND UN CAN ACT IMMEDIATELY TO PUT A STOP TO THE SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT MILITARY OFFENSIVE.
PLEASE LAUNCH A HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTION TO:
1. FORCE THE SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT TO CEASE ALL OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS
2. REMOVE THE REMAINING CIVILIANS INCLUDING THE THOUSANDS OF INJURED OUT OF THE CONFLICT
3. FORCE THE GOVERNMENT TO PUBLICLY ACCEPT THE LTTE OFFER TO LAY DOWN THE WEAPONS AND WORK WITH YOUR COUNTRIES TO INITIATE A POLITICAL DIALOGUE
THE RESPONSIBILITY TO SAVE THE LIVES OF 25,000 CIVILIANS IS NOW SQUARELY IN YOUR HANDS.
