Advocating for a Discrimination-Free University Newspaper

The students in 53-410 %u201CWomen in Protest%u201D engaged in a critical analysis of The Lance, a prominent newspaper at the University of Windsor. Our research has led us to recognize that there are many issues that need to be addressed in the Lance.

The Lance presents itself as "the university newspaper" that reflects the student population. We have concluded that this is not the case. Moreover, the material published in The Lance is often discriminatory, exclusive, and/or irrelevant to the majority of students on our campus.

In no way are we attacking the individuals associated with The Lance; we believe that there are improvements that must be made to the newspaper. We demand that the $4.91 (per semester) allocated to the Lance from students' compulsory fees be used to create a newspaper that is inclusive and representative of the students - not to help fund hate on campus. We demand the immediate implementation of an oversight board, and an updated ethics policy, that ensures accountability for published content.

By signing this petition you are not only demonstrating your support for an inclusive university paper that promotes diversity and represents students fairly, but also to help ensure that the Lance remains discrimination-free. Additionally, you are advocating that the concerns of students be addressed promptly, appropriately, and be met with respect.
