African Americans with Autism Spectrum Disorder

African Americans with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Target:
Government
As the number of African American Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders grows; there has been very few case or clinical studies involving them.

African-American children frequently are confronted with late diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Many misdiagnosed and undiagnosed African American Children end up in the criminal justice system each year. Our goal is to stop this miscarriage of justice; by helping families identify the warning signs of autism early on. We can start to overturn these disparities by helping African-Americans with autism reach their full potential. Empowering families with information on autism that they can use to advocate services for their child.

We are humbly requesting that more is done in the way of clinical and case studies of African American children affected by ASD. These studies will help a community better foster these children as well as dismiss the myth in the African American Community that Autism it is a white disorder.

'With the Medicine Buddha mantra you can liberate numberless sentient beings from oceans of suffering and bring them to enlightenment.' - Lama Zopa. Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha BeKanze Radza Samudgate Soha In the Bhaiṣajyaguruvaidūryaprabharāja Sūtra, the Medicine Buddha is described as having entered into a state of samadhi called "Eliminating All the Suffering and Afflictions of Sentient Beings." From this samadhi state he spoke the Medicine Buddha Dharani.[1] namo bhagavate bhaiṣajyaguru vaiḍūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajya-samudgate svāhā. The last line of the dharani is used as the Medicine Buddha's mantra. Medicine Buddha Sutra, as a bodhisattva who made 12 great vows. On achieving Buddhahood, he became the Buddha of the eastern realm of Vaidūryanirbhāsa, or "Pure Lapis Lazuli". The Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra[1] are: To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. To correct heretical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. To help beings follow the Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. To help relieve the destitute and the sick. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and mosquitoes.

I am the mother of a 5 year old with Autism. I noticed some mental abnormalities around the age of 2 and confronted the pediatrician about it. I was not able to get any additional feedback from the doctor except to say that she was going through a phase. I researched symptoms she presented and all signs pointed to autism. I researched places and people that may be able to help. I had to find out the proper questions to ask health professionals in order for them to comment. I had to have access to a computer in order to find one of the three schools that offered services for children with autism. I had to drive 30 miles for her to see a speech therapist and another 60 miles for a psychologist. When she started school, I had to force the school officials to do a proper evaluation to see that she gets the right services in school. (Testing started 2 months ago by the way) On a lighter note, she was diagnosed by a psychologist and is currently being evaluated by the school system, the same school system that would not evaluate her after a year of request and drive 60 miles away to see the only psychologist available to see her right away. Just think if I didn't have a car to drive or a computer to research or make constant phone calls and visits to the school board for testing, who knows where she would be right now.

I am the mom of a now 11yo with Autism. I consider him to be a gift and a poster child for early intervention. Ben began with many of the classic indicators of autism. It was extra-ordinarily difficult to get childcare for my precious son. Today he has a great vocabulary, was found to be highly gifted, participates (mostly) in regular education, and has some friends. The work is not over, as we now go through puberty. Social skills and language remain a steep climb. Our uninformed culture makes a social life challenging. Most friends are white.

My children do not have this disorder but I think it is important that this is brought to light to better understand the condition and how to treat and deal with it in the African American communities around the country.

I am the parent of a 12 year old and an 8 year old in autism spectrum. It has been around for three generations in my family but lack of autism awareness prevented most from getting the help they seek. Please make sure other african americans know that autism is not a "white" disease and spanking only makes violent teens and adults. Autism is not mental retardation and can create highly intelligent kids and adults too. Autism knows no bounds and race and poverty is not the problem. With love to all african parents hearing their child must be born on crack, rather than have a genetic disorder. Get educated on autism, disability rights and make louder voices to allow ALL kids with autism to have productive adult lives!

This is another area in which or community is suffering and lagging behind. We need embrace the research and the research also needs to come to us, as it has gone to other communities. Fact is, we need to become interested. This an epidemic affecting 1 in 91 families.

As the parent of a 13 year old African-American male diagnosed at 20 months old, I highly support this petition. Also as the Founder and Executive Director for African American Autism Support Services of Arizona I clearly understand the importance of this petition and support our sister agency "The Color of Autism Foundation" in this worthy endeavor. As many have stated in this survey any individual or family facing the reality of Autism deserves tremendous support, education, and encouragement and no family should be left to isolation and ignorance to face alone.

I am not African-American, but I do have a son with Autism. I am signing this petition because autism knows no color. I am Irish-Filipino and my son's father is Hispanic-American Indian. I lay no claim whatsoever to being white and my son sure isn't! When autism affects a child, it is devastating to not only the child, but the parents. Now that I'm a widow, it's seems even harder to deal with. Every child, regardless of skin color should be helped!!!

There needs to be more attention in respect to Autism and Black American children. The impact of Autism on the World and our communities is tremendous and we must begin to create a new awareness of Autism and our Black American children so that it does not continue to keep them from attaining the same services and other benefits that other children are given at this time.

This is a big no brain-er. A person's race, color, or ethnicity is entirely irrelevant when health problems or disorders are involved. How can anyone permit race discrimination to continue for autistic children? We must work hard to help all children, particularly those facing special challenges, to reach their personal potentials- mostly because it is just the right thing to do but also because it benefits all of us and our society. Autism is so heartbreaking - we want to treat, improve and prevent it for Everyone! Let's get the research work done and all enjoy the benefits!
