Avert Rolland Tragedy Part 2

Target:
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts

We, the undersigned, are supporters of the profoundly retarded, non-verbal, and medically fragile individuals cared for at the Seven Hills Pediatric Center in Groton whom the Department of Mental Retardation has recommended be moved out of their home.  The Commonwealth's claim that these individuals would be better off living in the Community and the current administration's abandonment of the previous practice of giving the individuals or families concerned the power to make this decision are sad departures from the past progressive and humane practices of our state.  I for one will hold the Patrick Administration accountable if it proceeds with this action and shortens the lives of these individuals.  If individuals who cannot speak for themselves cannot be spoken for by their family members and guardians, then none of us have any real rights.

Please visit our website at www.AvertRollandTragedy.org for more ways to help!

Please allow the parents, guardians, and those who love these people to make the decisions about where they shall live and be loved and cared for. How can it be any other way?

Please help us help those who cannot defend themselves. What a shame it is to treat disabled persons this way! Stability is essential to their care and improvement to the fullest possible awareness and health. What you plan to do is disruptive, misguided and dangerous to these indivduals' health.

Please help my son. He has lived at Seven Hills for six years. I kept him home for 18 years until his medical needs became to hard for him to be safe at home. Nursing was getting difficult and very unstable. My son needs 24 hour care to keep him alive. Shame on DMR and and the govener for not listening to our cry for help. My son can not walk, talk , eat food by mouth and has a seizure disorder that would knock your socks off. He is save where he is and well cared for. I am his legal guardian and should be the only one that makes his life choices for him god know I wish he could. Please help him and all the other families to fight .

We've been through enough pain and anguish dealing with the emotional, physical and psychological aspects of being a parent of a disabled child. If my child could be cared for in the community, I would have kept him at home and cared for him myself. Placing him in a facility that has qualified staff that know and care for my son, has given me peace of mind and helped me in dealing with the anguish of having to place my child in a Nursing Home. Please do not put us through that anguish again.

As a RN, I view this massive disruption to this group of profoundly retarded non-verbal, and medically fragile human beings apalling! Seven Hills has been providing around the clock medical care to this aggregate preventing multiple complications because of the level of care both required and provided to them. "Unloading" these individuals into the "community" (purely financially motivated) is ignorant and irresponsible. This blatant demonstration of disrespect displayed by "The Department of Mental Retardation" to these vulnerable indivduals is repulsive. I can't even believe this idea is being entertained.

Please help us help those who cannot defend themselves. My son cannot defend himself. He is 30 years old and has been at 7 Hills for 29 years. He IS at home ! I believe that moving him is the same as evicting him from his home, the one he has known for 29 years. He has developed many long and lasting and loving relationships over the years and I'm sure that those relationships have helped him to survive in an otherwise cruel world for him. In my opinion, moving him out of his well known community into an unfamiliar one would be detrimental to him. And I don't think for one minute that a group home will give him the support services he needs to stay alive and comfortable considering his many handicaps and medical conditions. I also will hold Gov. Patrick personally responsible for my sons health, if he is moved against my will. I am his mother and his LEGAL guardian.

We are outraged that the Patrick Administration has agreed to let these children die. That is what will happen if these individuals are moved to group homes- they will lose the safety net that surrounds them at Seven Hills. This is outrageous! My brother is on the 'list'- the list of children to be torn from their long-time home at Seven Hills. He would be helpless at a group home. My brother can't talk, can't walk, can't dress himself, can't even turn over in bed. He is completely dependent on staff for his tube feedings and his medications. I ask then: Why does the Administration think moving him is right? Turning him over to a group home without the staffing and practices that are in place at Seven Hills? And the answer is: They don't care! My family and I will NOT allow by brother to be moved. If you are reading this please help us by siging this petition and getting the word out. We need everyone out there to help these children! Thank you.

We love our daughter with every single breath we take and therefore WE the family along with her team of physicians will make the decision about what is best for her and where we believe she will get the most phenominal care and the fullest life. That place is Seven Hills, the place where her needs are met 24/7 by a loving, caring and attentive staff. NO ONE has the right to move our daughter without our knowledge, consent or agreement!
