Ban Canned Lion Hunting

The Act of Canned Lion Hunting. A so- called sport!!

The lion has normally been hand raised and therefore has no fear of humans. It is placed in a camp with no place to hide. The animal is normally drugged and in most instances, baited. This means that portions of meat are placed in strategic places to make it easier for the so-called hunters.

The guide then tracks the lion, although he knows exactly where it is, so that the hunter can take aim and shoot.  In most cases, more than one shot is required, as the hunter is not a seasoned shot and is only in South Africa to take back his trophy to put on his wall. What a waste!

We the undersigned, would like to bring the following issue to you attention:

We need to ban canned lion hunting in South Africa as this is a gruesome and barbaric act. It is nothing less than the massacre of these magnificent gifts from God. It is merely for recreation and boosting the egos of the individuals concerned. This is a disgrace to mankind!

We, as South Africans, are fighting a losing battle against the powers who have been elected to ensure that our natural heritage is preserved for future generations worldwide.

We urge you to take another look at the new legislation regarding the laws concerning canned lion hunting in South Africa. We urge you to ban the cowardly act of canned hunting. In turn take another look at the hunting laws in general. Hunting is seen as a sport, to test the skills of the hunter against the wits of the animal. Where in captivity and heving been hand raised, has the lion a fair chance? And this just for a mere trophy on a wall.

The cubs are normally removed from their nursing mothers when they are between 2 -3 days old. They are then kept in poor, inhumane conditions where they are being hand raised to have no fear of humans.

Once the animal has reached the correct size for a decent trophy, the animal is then placed in an enclosure where it awaits its fate. The animal is given no chance to escape, as it has either been drugged or is given its usual meal, which has been strategically placed. It is trapped between a fence and a man with a gun - in most cases more than one shot is required - as the hunter is not a seasoned shot.

We feel that Nature Conservation should take pride in their work as protectors and guardians of our wildlife. They should implement stringent rules and strict guide lines and enforce them. Why have they been given the task to look after our beautiful country yet cannot enforce the law with regards to individuals and organisations who are clearly in the wrong?

We stand firm in our beliefs that canned lion hunting is a disgrace to the sport and to our Country and action needs to be taken againts the organisations and individuals who practise this type of hunting. We should follow in the footsteps of the United States where they have banned or restricted canned lion hunting in over 20 states. Why can't we do the same?

We thank you for the time you have taken to read this letter, and hope that we have made a differance.
