Ban plastic bags in Minneapolis

It's estimated that a million plastic bags are used every minute around the world! These bags take thousands of years to decompose and when they do they release toxic chemicals into the environment.  However, the harm these bags cause begin much before that. If you use these bags yourself, you might wonder why ban them when they are so convenient? Do your own research or click on the UTUBE video on the left that I borrowed from another petition to ban plastic bags in LA county and see for yourself why these bags are more trouble than they are worth. If you use only paper bags, then you are still harming the environment because trees are cut down to make paper bags. Bringing your own bags (it's a lot easier than you think) is the best way to shop! My family has been doing this for a long time. We have reusable bags in our cars at all times so that they are right there when we need them. We just take the appropriate number of bags in the store with us. It's a small change people can easily make and it's very easy to get used to. There are a lot of other problems this world faces and this is one small thing people can do to remove an enormous negative impact on the environment.
Reusable bags are now widely available, are cheap and are a one time cost. The number of plastic bags used annually is staggering - estimated to be over 1 trillion worldwide. Millions of these are used every minute in the US alone. Most people use these bags unscrupulously without giving a second's thought to their lifecycle and the impact they have on the environment. The evidence for the harm these bags cause is overwhelming. A simple Google search or plastic bags will give you all the information you need. So, why are these bags still being used? It's because people don't realize that the cons far outweigh the pros of these bags. Sometimes I see people double bagging for no reason. Others use a bag for one tube of toothpaste or one book at a bookstore and I wonder if they realize that they could have easily avoided getting a bag by just asking the cashier not to put it in a bag. Most people don't even realize that this is a problem and some are just not willing to make the small adjustment to bring their own bags.  Clearly, the government needs to step in. Only a ban on these bags will change peoples habits. Other cities and even entire countries are banning these bags. It's only a matter of time before it happens. So, why not make sure it happens sooner rather than later and make a little (actually a lot) less pollution and save a lot of animals. Animals have other problems to worry about without having to worry about eating plastic bags and dying painful deaths. So, let us do this one small thing for the planet and for future generations.
