Ban Smoking on the Entire Campus of Eastern Illinois University

Are you tired of walking through big clouds of smoke as you transfer from class to class here at Eastern? Would you like to have fresh air when you walk out of building doors, no matter the time of year? Are you tired of the groups of people who hang out by the building entrances, smoking at every entrance you go to? Do you feel like there is no way around these big clouds of cancer? This petition is being put together for the people who care about their health, who are tired of watching the young people straight out of high school coat their lungs with black tar, and not care about those around them who do not smoke. Let's ban smoking on campus completely...no "smoking" sections anywhere, that's like trying to place a peeing spot in community pools.

We the undersigned are asking to have smoking banned on the entire campus of Eastern Illinois University. Placing smoking sections on campus is not a good idea, and giving the idea to college students that it is OK to be smoking on campus is not a good idea. Some would say smoking sections are like urinating sections in a community pool, it filters throughout the entire area. Kids fresh out of high school don't need to be exposed to cigarettes, and if the State of Illinois is banning smoking within 15 feet of all building entrances, as well as windows of buildings as of January 1, 2008, let's go the extra step, follow the lead of the Sarah Bush hospital and make EIU a smoke-free area.

its the right thing to do, the rights of the public are more important than individual rights in this case. Afterall, we don't have peeing sections and non-peeing sections in our swimming pools. We can't separate non-smoking and smoking sections in a similar fashion!

I personally am allergic to smoke and have serious negative effects every time I encounter heavy smoke or have it blown in my face. Since starting at EIU I have had to place myself on allergy pills to help with this problem. I would love to stop taking these pills and a campus wide smoking ban would do the trick.
