Chevy Cobalt Power Steering Problems

I own a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. The power steering is defaulted. It randomly gives out and the steering becomes stiff and impossible to turn. This poses a serious risk for all drivers of this vehicle as well as others on the road. This problem can cause serious injuries. The dealer offers to fix the problem from around 950 to 1000 dollars.

I bought a 2005 Chevy Cobalt in 2006. I was on my way to work yesterday, going 45 mph I almost smashed into the back of a semi because my power steering went out. I couldn't get into the turning lane fast enough. I was probably like a cm away from smashing into that semi. This needs to get fixed. I am scared to drive it now. I can shut the car off and turn it right back on and the power steering is fine for a while then it'll stop again. My husband did some searching online and he said there was a fatality due to this issue. I called the place I bought the car from, they said they would fix it if I get into a head-on collision. WTF? That is NOT right in any way shape or form. This needs to be fixed NOW. It's going to be $1,100 OUT OF MY F'n POCKET BECAUSE CHEVY IS TO STUPID TO FIX THEIR PROBLEMS. I wish I never would have bought this car. They have given me more excuses than a kid that doesn't do his/her homework. This is stupid. I guess another person has to be injured or God forbid die, before they fix this problem.

LUCKILY I DIDNT GET HIT... I WENT TO THE AUTO STORE TO GET SOME POWER STEERING FLUID... I DIDNT SEE WHERE IT WENT SO I ASKED A GUY WHO WORKED THERE TO HELP ME... HE AS WELL COULDNT FIND IT... HE TOLD ME TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP... WHEN I CALLED THEM THEY SAID MY CAR DONT TAKE POWER STEERING FLUID... IT RUNS ON AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM... THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT... IT COST $100 JUST TO LOOK AT IT... HE THEN SAID IT COULD COST UP TO $1500 TO FIX... I DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY... NOW JUST LAST WEEK MY BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WENT OUT... IT COST $600 JUST TO FIX THAT... NOW MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON... IT SEEM TO BE ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER WIT THIS CAR... MY CAR IS ONLY A 2006 AND IT BARELY HAVE 40,000 MILES ON IT... Just bought this 2009 with 13000 miles on it for my 17 year old daughter shes supposed to take her drivers test this thursday nov 19 but today the steering locked up on her and she almost crashed now shes afraid to drive and cancelled her test Its hard to believe that the new gm will not rectify this problem would not have bought this death trap if I would have just read the numerous complaints on the web I will tell everybody I know to stay away from GM I guess the new GM is just bussiness as usual!

i have a 2006 chevy cobalt ls and i have had nothing but problems since i bought it. one day i went to work, or tried and the Service Airbag showed up on the DIS. along with that all at the same time the power steering went out the a/c the wipers and all of the dash lights. this car is really a piece of crap and i would not reccomend any one to buy one

My daughter rcvd thia car for her 16th bday. She almost wrecked 3xs because power steering locked up or stopped working. GM needs to do something about this.

I bought my 2005 Cobalt new, off the show room floor. It is the first car I have ever owned and it has been nothing but a pain since I bought it. I have had multiple problems with it over the years and the newest being the power steering going out. I nearly wrecked when it went out the first time on me, and after I shut the car off and turned it back on the power steering came back on but only shortly. It is very dangerous now to even drive my car that I am still making Large payments on! If I could go back in time knowing what I know now I would have never bought this car and I tell everyone I know the same thing!

I bought my daughter a 2006 colbalt so she would have good transportation while at college. Wrong the power steering went out on her in heavy traffic she was lucky and was able to pull over and turn off the car and restart it and get back to campus.She has to have the power steering motor replaced $450 bucks the car only has 30,000 on it but past the 3yr warranty by 6 months. What a joke I will get this car back and get rid of it next time she is home from school.

Yesterday my son was drivng our 2007 Cobalt and going to make a turn when the power steering light came on and then it just froze. He glided into an off ramp of a shopping center!!! Very dangerous. He turned the car off and then restarted it and the steering worked. The car has 42000 miles on it. My suggesstion to send this petition address to everyone on your e-mail list to notify all Cobalt owners. Next call all of your Federal Congress Members and demand they take this issue up - both House of Rep and Senators. This is a very serious problem since the Cobalt has electronic - not hydraulic steering. A loss of steering capability is going to kill someone.

I am a single mother of two and my power steering light just popped up while driving on a 3 hour trip. It was very scary for me and my kids. It is very expensive to replace and dnt have all the money to replace it. If I had known it was goin to be a problem I could have saved. It dnt even give u a warning uys goin to go out. It just locks on you andit is very dangerous. I think it needs to be recalled because its not oir fault that there is no warning to let u know.I am now scared to drive and have to get my kids to school and doctors appointments.

My cobalt not only looses power steering, the steering becomes almost impossible to steer. Like the electric motor is seizing. The vehicle also stutters and has hard shifting when this occurs and there is a clicking sound from the transmission gear shift. Dealers will just try and charge you money to inspect the vehicel EVEN UNDER WARRANTY. My country, Canada, just helped bail out GM and this is the garbage they leave me with? i am very upset with my 2006 chev colbolt, i feel like that GM has falsely claimed this is a reliable car, the power steering is in and out, the paint job is shabby, the key to start the engine has to be jarred every time, how dare they claim this. i will never buy another GM product, my caliver was the best , this car is the worst.

I bought my 2005 Cobalt new. It has less than 38K miles on it. In the last week, there have been 2 incidents in which the power steering warning went off, and the steering wheel locked up totally. I am afraid to drive it, and the dealership has told me that they can only diagnose it if I can replicate it at their station. Obviously, this is not possible, since it is random. Luckily, I was driving at a low rate of speed on a straight road both times. A recall is needed to save lives!

I've only had my cobalt for a couple of years, and bought it brand new. I've had one issue after another, and to add insult to injury, Chevy neglects any and all ownership for the bad make. All and all, I’ve lost my confidence in this company. Having spent a lot of money on a car which has so many issues is one thing, but having to deal with extremely bad customer service and their inability to make up for their errors is another. If Chevy can’t at least fix my power steering issue on their dime then they won’t ever receive any more business from me again. Not stopping there though, I’m sharing my experience with this company with everyone I can. Maybe they want become future victims of this company.

I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt that I bought brand new. I bought it new so that I wouldn't have problems. I've had nothing but problems with this car. I had to have the o2 censors replaced twice and now I'm having the power steering light come on. It will jerk until I shut it off and turn it back on. My traction control light and check engine light come on periodically.

I have a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt that just came out of warranty. I was driving home when my power steering light came on and my sterring wheel became really tight and very hard to move. I was going around 60 mph when this happened. I am lucky I was not far away from home or was not driving a curvy side road. I am going to have to have my car towed to a dealer to get an estimate on having my car fixed. I had my car in to my dealer less then 3000 miles ago for electronical issues. Doing a search on this situation has found numerous other Cobalt owners whom have experienced these same issues.

My dad bought me '05 cobalt as my 1st car on 05/'09 n PS flash 2 days after I got the car I was driving out of my driveway when PS flashed n D steering was ROCK SOLID I couldn't turn, I freaked and left the car outside I called my dad, went back out and drove it in, It felt like I was pulling a million pounds. Im scared of driving it, that it's just parked in the driveway we got it used with 8,000 miles on it So we have no warranty, and I certainly don't have $2,000 to fix it WE NEED A RECALL

My power steering stopped working all of a sudden. I was driving down the freeway and it just went out on me. This is a very dangerous thing and I think GM Chevrolet should do a recall. This happened right after my key began getting stuck in the ignition. This car is unsafe. I contacted Chevrolet and all they offered to do was have the car towed to a dealership to have the car looked at and if it wasn't under warranty, I would have to pay for everything. It is only at 49,000 miles and I bought it at 37,000 miles. What a piece of junk Chevy sold.

Every time i get in my car i am risking my life. I just bought my cobalt two months ago and has already had two things go wrong with it. They are dangerous i nearly wrecked several times when it went out while i was going around a curve and i started fishtailing. Obviously GM does not care about the safety of there customers. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER GM PRODUCT.

So i have an 05 Cobalt and recently i started having the same problem im reading about. I had no clue that it was such a problem with the cobalts. I have not had a near accident experience and sure hope not because im constantly driving from home to work and im using long stretches of road doing about 55-65. A power steering lock up is the last thing i need. I really think that GM needs to really take a look at how many peoples lives they are putting in risk by not paying attention to there problem.

I am really displeased with my chevy cobalt 06 i have avoided a a accident but i dont think that it should be taken lightly my power steering idicator came on and steering wheel locked up getting off interstate!!!!!!!!!!! i was so scared and shocked and i do all the maintance that is need to my car and this powers steering problem accurs spontaneously and i dont want to risk my life or anyone else such as passengers with this issue!!!!!!!!!!!! please help me i am in a financial hardship and i dont know what to do.....

I am the owner of a 2008 Chevy Cobalt with less than 30,000 miles on the vehicle. I am having intermittent Power stearing lock ups when driving on the highway. There has been no other option than to glide to the shoulder and turn off the vehicle. This is a very dangerous situation and I expect GM to man up and resolve to address the problem. Consumers should not be placed in this condition on a new vehicle, or any vehicle. You are playing roulette with our lives. You have a problem and need to do the right thing. Stop looking at your bottom line.

My 2007 Chevy Cobalt has given me problems from the start. My left driver side window doesn't work, the check gas cap message pops up continuously, and the POWER STEERING no longer works. As soon as I start the car the power steering message comes on and its so so so hard to turn the wheel. I cannot afford to get it fixed so I have been driving it all over town in fear. I can't even go out of town its that bad. Of course it's not under warranty so what am I suppose to do!

My Daughter bought her CobaltLS in 2005,nothing but problems,heater blower went twice,speaker problems,recently had to have shifter replaced and prior to that problems getting the key out of the ignition,window had to be fixed didnt go up and down,interior door handles and door locks peeling off and exposing sharp edges.Now a month after the shifter problem her power steering randomly goes out.She has an extended warranty but has to pay the dealer a 75 dollar fee to diagnose power steering which we already know doesnt work,then the warranty company will decide if and what they will pay.Rip off for the warranty coverage and the car.Steering will cost at LEAST 500 to fix but they dont know.She only has 45000 miles on the car.Must be nice for GM to be able to file bankruptcy and 90 days later come up smelling like a rose while everyone who bought these cars and putting their lives at risk.They need to do a recall and pay for their mistakes

I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt, that has MAJOR issues! I regret EVER buying this POS. The key will not release after parking the car and putting car into park, you have to pump the brakes for some reason to be able to remove your key. The POWER STEERING message comes across the display, This happens VERY frequently!! When the message comes on the POWERSTEERING IS GONE!! I feel this is a MAJOR safety issue with this car. Upon turning the car off and back on the PowerSteering is back. The front speakers in this car are COMPLETELY SCREWED UP. The passenger side speaker does NOT work at all, the drivers side speaker comes and goes, And when it comes on.. It will BLAST you out of the car. The door lock buttons on the passenger side no long light up. WOW what a GREAT CAR THIS IS!! I will like I was ROBBED of my money!!!
