We condemn the raid on four abortion clinics in Barcelona with the arrest of their director, Dr. Carlos Morin, his wife and several other staff members, without any clear accusation having been made public by the Spanish authorities.
The raids were ordered following a video released on Danish television, where an anti-abortion couple pretending to want a late abortion entered Dr Morin's clinic with a hidden camera earlier this year and recorded incriminating conversations.
Investigations by the Colegio de Médicos de Barcelona, however, revealed no grounds for the accusation that the clinic practised unlawful abortions.
We call on the Spanish authorities to:
1. Clarify publicly as soon as possible what Dr. Carlos Morin, his wife and his staff are accused of.
2. Conduct a thorough investigation without delay into the question of whether there are any grounds for the accusation that Dr. Carlos Morin and his staff have been involved in any illegal activity.
3. Ensure, within the limits of Spanish law, that professional help for women who seek a termination of their pregnancy in Dr. Morin's clinics will continue to be available, until and unless any proof is shown that the work of these clinics does not meet professional and legal standards.
