MAYOR WALKER:

WE, THE CITIZENS OF BOSSIER CITY, LA., PETITION THE CITY TO IMPLEMENT CURBSIDE RECYCLING.

AS YOU ARE AWARE, THE CITY OF SHREVEPORT HAS JUST BEGUN CURBSIDE RECYCLING OR "CURB IT". SHREVEPORT ESTIMATES THAT THEY WILL REDUCE THEIR DISPOSAL OF WASTE BY 3000 TONS PER MONTH WITH THIS NEW PROGRAM. BASED ON TODAYS DISPOSAL COST THAT IS A MONTHLY SAVINGS OF $68,000. THIS SAVINGS WILL COVER THE COST TO THE CITY FOR SUPPLYING THE RECYCLING BINS. THE ADDITIONAL COST TO EACH RESIDENT OF SHREVEPORT FOR THIS PROGRAM WILL ONLY BE $2.50 PER MONTH. SHREVEPORT HAS ALMOST FOUR TIMES THE POPULATION OF BOSSIER CITY, SO THE COST/BENEFIT RATIO WILL DIFFER, BUT THE PRINCIPLE IS STILL THE SAME. REDUCE WASTE, REDUCE COST.

IMPLEMENTING THE CONVENIENCE OF CURBSIDE RECYCLING WOULD RESULT IN INCREASED PARTICIPATION. THE BENEFITS GO FAR BEYOND REDUCING WASTE TO OUR LANDFILL. PREVENTING WASTE NOT ONLY SAVES RESOURCES AND REDUCES POLLUTION, IT ALSO SAVES MONEY.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF BOSSIER CITY, SUPPORT CURBSIDE RECYCLING IN BOSSIER CITY AND WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY THE SMALL INCREASE ON OUR WATER/SEWER BILLS TO HELP FUND THIS MUCH NEEDED PROGRAM.

Dear Mayor Walker,

The reason for this petition is to make you aware that the majority of the citizens of Bossier City support curbside recycling.  We believe that this is an important issue and would not only be beneficial to our environment, but can have a positive impact on Bossier City's reputation in Northwest Louisiana and the Country.

Please help Bossier City become a leader in the environmental movement by implementing curbside recycling.  We appreciate your time and consideration.

I sincerely hope that Bossier Parish leaders will make the responsible choice to provide curbside recycling. I've recycled since we moved back in 1994. Due to my recycling efforts, the amount of waste my family puts out for pickup is at least half of my neighbors even with 2 teenage boys with endless appetites. Surely you recognize the benefit of not placing that much garbage into the landfill. I find it embarrassing that family members living in smaller towns in Louisiana have curbside recycling while Bossier City refuses to make the responsible choice.

I was surprised that Bossier did not join Shreveport in the plans to provide curb side recycling service. I am a Shreveport/Bossier native and fully expected Bossier to at least get on board with this project to promote environmental conservation, if not do one better and implement our own. The time to encourage recycling is NOW. If our city officials are waiting to let Shreveport "get up to full steam", then they are wasting precious time that could be used to educate Bossier City residents about the costs/savings associated with recycling and enable them the same services Shreveport currently offers. I can't imagine anyone would be against paying a mere $2.50 per month for the benefits of curb side recycling. With gas prices being what they are, if it takes a gallon or two of gas to drive your own recycling to the drop-off center monthly (like we currently do), you have already spent more than the city fee would be!! Please bring us in line with other communities serving their residents with ideas and abilities to participate in "going green" - it's important for us all.

The excuse of "waiting to see what happens with Shreveport's recycling program" is a poor one. Shreveport is not the first city to start a recycling program so why do you have to wait to see if it works? What city did Shreveport model to start their program? Did they have a "wait and see" period? Of course not. Mayor Walker, please realize that every day, week, month and year that you do not include Bossier City in a recycling program, your actions, or lack thereof are harming the environment. Please consider taking the initiative instead of taking a "wait and see" outlook on this.
