This week, 10 migrant workers were killed in a vehicle accident when one worker who wasn't licensed to operate a multi-passenger vehicle ran a stop sign. All across Ontario, migrant workers are being asked or forced to work in conditions that are unsafe and that they are untrained for - and workplace laws are not enforced. Call on the Ontario Ministry of Labour to enforce all laws equally for all workers.
This week, an accident where a migrant worker was not properly licensed to operate a motor vehicle resulted in 11 needless deaths. This accident is highlighting the conditions of migrant workers in Ontario and in Canada overall. Labour laws are not being enforced, workers are being asked or forced to do tasks that are dangerous or that they are not properly trained for, and workers are told not to complain or they will lose their job and be shipped back to where they came from.
As proud consumers of food from Ontario, we also believe that food needs to be raised and processed ethically. This cannot happen unless all those who are involved in the processing of that food are treated ethically. We ask that the Ministry of Labour be proactive in ensuring that migrant workers, those workers that our food industry heavily relies on, are protected under the same standards and laws that all workers in Ontario should enjoy.
