Petition Against the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement

Help protect our water for future generations!
We, the undersigned, are Dine' opposed to the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement.  We are against this agreement because:

  • It gives away forever all but a tiny trickle of our potential rights to water in the Lower Colorado River Basin.  Yet it protects vast water supplies for Phoenix, Tucson, the Central Arizona Project, Navajo Generating Station, Kayenta Mine, and other non-Indian water users.

  • It makes empty promises for pipelines to provide small amounts of household water for some Dine' communities, but only if the U.S. agrees to pay for the pipelines.  Also, it prohibits using that water for agriculture.

This agreement was worked out behind closed doors by non-Indian lawyers working together with powerful interests far away.  The Dine' were not informed or consulted about this, yet we will lose the most.
Therefore we insist that our Council Delegates vote against the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Agreement.  It is a desecration of our people, our livestock and fields, and the lives of future generations.
