Fighting Back Now

Target:
Fighting Against Identity Theft
Sponsored by:

We need some new laws to stop identity theft! I am writing to you with the hopes that you will take some action to help stop the fastest growing crime in America. Speaking first hand, I know how identity theft devastates lives. Identity theft is getting out of control because it is so easy to perform with minimal consequences. I have listed some items that desperately need to be addressed:

  • Pass the Social Security Number Misuse Act bill - Let's make it law. This law would cut back on social security number usage; and even though there would be a financial cost, it is imperative to our future generations that we get these numbers minimally used and protected. It should be mandatory that all social security numbers be taken off Drivers Licenses throughout the country and never used as identification by businesses.
  • Establish clear federal standards for breached information - The Data Accountability and Trust Act needs to be revised, making companies and financial institutions more accountable. No exceptions! Mass notification should be required in a timely manner! Why are institutions with inadequate security to begin with getting to decide if their breaches are significant enough for their customers to know they have been put at risk? No CEO is going to mention a problem if he/she doesn't have to. Let the consumer decide if it is a serious issue. We are ultimately the ones cleaning up the mess.
  • Impose prison sentences - Stiffer sentences are needed to detour the amateur crooks that make up a good proportion of the crime ring. I believe enforcing prison time will certainly reduce this crime.
  • Update the nation's death registry - Implement precautions so that credit bureaus and government agencies don't wind up issuing benefits to the deceased. We should stop grave-robbers. It is another way to protect the living.
  • Remove bad credit or a criminal record from victims - Why should fraudulent accounts against a victim's credit still be visible on their credit report? Why should crimes committed under a victim's name be a permanent stamp on them, e.g. a criminal record? Someone who is or has been a victim of identity theft should not have to pay penalties or pay for losses financially or reputably.
  • Free protection for all -
    • All states should have ID theft registries with a toll free number and password to give to police officers and other officials.
    • Drivers' licenses could have swipe identification, like credit cards, for banks to authenticate.
    • Passwords on bank and company accounts along with picture identification (if a customer wants these types of protection they should be able to get it).
    • No charge for extra verification coverage for new or existing accounts. Why should a consumer have to pay extra to be protected?
    • Federal mail keys and locks reissued across the country. Those keys and locks are old and need to be replaced.

I feel companies don't care how they get/generate business just as long as they have it. I no longer deal with companies or people that have misused my information. I no longer give them my patronage. I will continue to communicate their negligence, so that other customers will reconsider their business. As my representative, I would like to see a response from you regarding the identity theft epidemic. I will only vote for someone who takes action against this issue in the next election.

As to what our government must do to prevent these financial crimes of our citizens.... One possible solution: One more number should be added to our social security numbers that is only known to the original person issued the card. It would be like a pin number that can only be entered by the holder into a national datebase, like banks have. Anyone using a social security number to open any account, etc., would have to enter it into that database before it could be approved.

I had my mailbox broken into and the police and post office did nothing about it. Not only were bills and other financial information stolen but so was a birth card and a passport. There should be more protection for everyone to abides by the law!

My daughter had her mailbox broken into and she got absolutely no help from the post office. We need tougher laws. Quit slapping criminals on the wrist and saying "be good now" - stick them with stiff penalities.

Thank you for your petition. I have been targeted twice thru my Bank of America Account, The huge corporation does not care that they were provided exactly what was stolen, my money and my identity. I was a single mother on a very tight budget. My card number was taken from a merchant copy of a credit receipt. Even thought I had spending limits on my account. Several purchases totaling $1400.00 went thru for Concert tickets. Purchased on my card and held in someone elses name. The concert ticket outlet clerk slipped and gave me the persons name and the seat numbers with my proof of id 4 forms to be exact. I still could not get him charged. With the total he attempeted to spend on my account it would have been a felony. Nope no charges the bank wasnt much more help. A year later all od fees were finally refunded leaving me a positive balance of $7.00. Now Bank of America has sent me to 4 credit collection agency's for od fees that they have refunded. I have a new hit on my report each time, I have to provide both police reports and copies of all documents I received from the bank. To no avail I have gone as far as the presidents office for Bank of America. After several documented phone calls I still have not been contacted back.

We as victims have to protect ourselves better and need the means and support to do so. I agree witht he petition 100%. I had a breach of security at my bank Wachovia and they would not even acknowledge the breach. I researched and found the perpetrators and was able to stop them before they did damgae, at least hope so. They have all of my personal info. The bank, police, FBI; no one would help me becasue I was lucky and stopped them before they actually commmitted the fraud. Apparently, it is not a crime to access a persons account and have a card sent to an alternate address to commit the theft. I even have the perpetrators information through detective work and still can't do anything about it. THe bank will not even cross reference with other accounts the originating phone number that attmpted to steal me blind with other account members at Wachovia. They would do nothing to help prevent fraud in this manner. I want to get involved with helping others fight identy theft.

I am currently serving in the Army overseas and recently, had my personal information stolen from me. I do not know what the individual has planned and it is a scary ordeal. Yet, our government says, our social security number cannot be used for identity theft. Tell that to DMV! Identity theft needs to be stopped! I do not have much faith in our government, with identity theft and educating ourselves is going to be our best protection.

I feel that the sentencing that was given was not enough. That woman should have gotten years in prison. I believe that if that had been anyone associated with the law or government then this person would have ended up in prison for years, but when it comes to the civilians then nothing much is done. I was very angry when I read the story in a magazine and this woman didn't get much time to serve. I feel that she should have gotten a lot more and had to serve all of it instead of a short amount of time because of good behavior. The law continues to get worse each day.

I was a victim of credit card theft. It is a horrible feeling to have someone actively stealing your identity and credit cards while you watch. Fortunately I caught it early enough to stop it before I lost everything. We need to go after these criminals.

I, too, am aware that an identity is stolen every 10 seconds in the United States. Strong measure both by government and by individuals must be taken to slow the fastest growing crime in the world today. I support Karen's efforts to educate and protect.

I too was a victim of identity theft; my wallet was stolen from my purse the weekend before Thanksgiving 2007. I would like to see retailers be more responsible and share some of the burden of identity theft if it occurs in their store. In my case, there were security 'eyes' in the ceiling - BUT NOT ONE REAL CAMERA OR SURVEILLANCE IN ANY OF THEM. Additionally, the manager of the store did not offer one bit of assistance, he refused to call the police and allowed the suspect (aka THIEF) to walk right out the front door. Also, the thief was able to get away with writing checks by using my driver's license as ID - she made a color copy of her driver's license, cut out and taped her picture over mine. If just one retailer had asked her to remove her ID from her wallet for comparison - she might have been stopped sooner. It should be law that retailers MUST have security cameras that are operational, and retailers MUST take the extra five or ten seconds to ask for ID to be removed from the wallet to check picture, signature, address information, etc. They spend money and time attaching - and then detaching - security tags...why don't they take pro-active steps during check out? Thank you Karen for this website!!!!

on march31,2008 i found out that my sons girlfriend had been using one of my credit cards and aslo had opened up 4 more in my name total charges were over 13,000.00 im still dealing with these credit card companies they make it so easy for people to do this by sending applications through the mail thats how it was done to me since she was here alot she knew where i kept all my information.im angry i want these stores to also be held repsonsible for not having people show their ID when making a purchase i called a few of the stores and ask if they would just put a sign up saying they check ID beacuse i found out that when this girl went to a store that had this on the credit card machine she just walked out the door. the stores told me they couldnt just do that but that they would bring it up in a meeting and they still havent done anything about it.

Please pass the Social Security Number Misuse Act bill. There is no reason for ANY organization to use our Social Security numbers for filing convenience or for identification. Each time it is used and put on an application makes the number much more vulnerable to theft and misuse.

My daughter has had her idenity stolen. She has done all the proper paperwork (piles and piles) and has the police report and formal paperwork. Dell Finance called her a few months ago and asked if she ordered a computer. She said no and explained her identity had been stolen and to not approve any credit for this purchase, that she has formal proof if her situation. Dell ignored her and sold the computer. We have heard from Dell Financing by phone over and over, from a person who is obviously from India. I have told them they sold a computer knowing it was idenity theft. My daughter has sent them police reports and legal affidavits. They still have mailed her the bill for over $2000.00. What type of companies listen to thieves over people who have been victimized. Her (now old) bank, Wells Fargo has been useless. They allowed her bank account to be emptied to a person without proper id and it has been months; she has met all their demands, and still they have not reimbursed her, her savings account! Why do these companies ignore victims and then victimize them more? There needs to be more severe punishment for people who steal idenities, more protections for the honest consumer and some type of reprisal for those companies who don't treat victims with respect.

As a detective with my local police department I work a lot of ID thefts. I understand how frustrating this can be to a victim. I also find it frustrating to see the criminal get off with such a lite sentence. Usually the suspect is out of jail before I get my paperwork done. Lets make the criminal stay behind bars at least until the victim is able to get their affairs back in order!

I became an victim by my own husband. I since then divorced him and FBI in Jackson MS let him get by with it because I was married to him! Still, just because you are married, doesn't give you the right to do whatever you want in somebody else's name! Regardless, its a CRIME!!!!!!!! I am now working with the state of Virginia, where they are currently working my case, and I pray that justice will be served!

I am the editor for a "Mended Hearts" chapter populated mostly with senior seniors. We don't always read our mail as carefully as we should. We could fail to note that the letter contains a leak into our security. We might toss out credit cards that come in the mail as just some junk to snare us that doesn't need our total attention. As with Karen Lodrick, we could think that NO bank would send both a credit card AND the ID number in the same mail package! Such stupidity and blatant disregard of customers security is certainly deserving of heavy penalties and new law enforcement guidelines!

I had my ID stolen in 2006 and have taken all precautions since then. Karen's story printed in IBD reminded me of how ANGRY I was when Wells Fargo kept sending my PERSONAL information in the mail to solicit me to sign up for more services! Ridiculous! Enough is enough. THANK YOU Karen for taking the time to do this on our behalf. Carly Matthews

No company outside the government should require a social security number from you. It is a breach of personal security and it seems that offenders never get caught/penalized, while victims can have their lives destroyed. Stop the nonsense

My Social Security card specifically states "not for identification." How can all these businesses get away with requiring this number for identification. Are they too lazy, or wanting to cut expenses too much, to devise their own method of IDing their customers? If the State of Missouri can devise an alternative for its drivers' licenses, others can do it also.

It's time to make the federal government accountable for the security of our social security numbers. When they were first issued the promise was made that they were not to be used for identification purposes. Well, look what has happened! Non-tax use of the SSN should be prohibited by law and stiff penalties imposed for the practice.

Over the last 7 years, someone has used fake checks and IDs in my name in a different state 4 times now. They don't even have my social security number, yet these fake checks keep getting sent to collection agencies and then ends up on my credit report. How can the credit agencies apply this to my credit report when the only match is my name? I think they should be held responsible as well for putting bogus liabilities on our credit reports without verifying the accuracy first.

I am a recent victim of fraud. It has been a few months now since I found out someone had charged $4000 on a very old credit card of mine, and I am still trying to get it worked out with the credit bureau & credit card company. They went by the name & address I haven't had in 10 years. I'm sure I will never know who this person was and it really bothers me to know that people like that get away with it. They get what they want and the victims have to spend their time & money to get it all cleared up. We need stronger punishments for fraud crimes.
