We Can Save More Energy

We Can Save More Energy

Target:
Massachusetts utilities and the Energy Efficiency Advisory Council
- Our homes are old and drafty.
- We need money to fix them up.
- And we need jobs.

There is a simple solution to all three problems--and we are already paying for it.

We pay an "energy efficiency charge" on all our electric and gas bills. This small charge adds up to a big pot of money that the utility companies have to use to make our communities more energy efficient.

  • Mass Energy is working with the Green Justice Coalition  to make sure that utility energy efficiency plans are designed to save as much energy as they can cost-effectively before buying more expensive energy from fossil fuels.  Right now, utilities in Massachusetts are meeting about one (1) percent of energy needs through energy efficiency.  They are currently proposing to save about 2-2.5% per year.  We want to raise that target to 3%.

You can help make this happen! Here's how.

1. Sign this petition -- it tells the utility companies and the state to triple their energy savings and create more weatherization, more up-front financing, and more jobs for our communities.

2. Join the Green Justice Coalition on October 6 when we will testify and pressure the utility companies and the state. We will meet at 4 pm at 100 Cambridge Street in downtown Boston, the state office building where the state Energy Efficiency Advisory Council is holding a special hearing. For more information call Loie Hayes at 617-278-1885.

To my utility company:

My community needs to become a "green community." This means:

We need more home weatherization so we can save money and energy.

We need up-front financing so homeowners and tenants can weatherize our homes completely and start saving money immediately.

We need good jobs doing all this weatherization work in our community.

I am a ratepayer and I want you to raise your energy savings work to to create more neighborhood outreach, up-front financing, and jobs.

To the state Energy Efficiency Advisory Council:

We are paying the utility companies millions of dollars to do energy efficiency work. We need to see more results in our communities which are the hardest hit by the energy and economic crises. Please require the utility companies to achieve 3% energy savings every year so we can become a "green community" with energy efficient homes, financing, and jobs.

We need to increase our energy mix to include green energy Sources. The US should be leading the way on this effort!!!!

Conservation means security: energy, political and environmental security.

The energy mix needs to increase to include a much larger portion received from 'green energy sources'. This will help to protect our interests now and in the future and help to keep American dollars in America. Now that is the American way....Tax credits need to be implemented and increased to help citizens implement these technologies....

I support the goal of more and better energy efficiency work. How about recruting young people and returning veterans to specialize in this type of work? Insulation and energy assessment are good jobs that will never be sent overseas.

Since the seventy's we've created a massive Dept. of energy. It seems to be quite well funded but what are the results? We've needed to become less dependent on fossil fuel for over forty years. There must be some show for the effort somewhere? It's TIME people!!!!

We have taken some measures to increase the efficiency of our house, with a bit of help from our utilities, but would like to see the trend extend beyond those who are consciously "green."

I strongly believe that much more potential exists for investment in greater energy efficiency, particularly for New England homes, than in investments for obtaining or producing other energy sources. I have taken advantage of efficiency incentives offered by utilities which have served me and it has been both cost effective as well as a service which has helped identify where the most potential for benefits versus costs in obtaining such efficiency. I strongly advocate for expansion of these efforts.

I support raising the goal for energy efficiency for Massachusetts and the Northeast. I also think that programs designed to meet this goal should be a combination of market incentives, improved building standards for new construction, targeted community improvement projects that demonstrate the potential for best practices, and collaboration with local universities to develop innovative approaches to the problem.
