Health Care Reform Now!

Target:
Governor Schwarzenegger, President Pro Tem Perata, Speaker Nunez
Sponsored by:

(El mensaje se repite en español a continuación.)

With the arrival of a special legislative session focused solely on health care reform, there is still time to ensure health coverage that includes everyone, serves everyone, and is affordable to everyone living in California now.

Governor Schwarzenegger, President Pro Tem Perata, and Speaker
Núñez, we ask you to come to an agreement on real health care reform before the end of the special session that:

1. Addresses health disparities by providing health insurance to those who need it most,

2. Reforms the insurance market so even the sickest among us can get  quality health care,

3. Doesn't require individuals to shoulder the burden of purchasing unaffordable health insurance,

4. Includes cost containment measures and a cap on out of pocket expenses, premiums, and co-payments.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Resolver las disparidades en el cuidado medico a través de la disponibilidad de seguro médico para aquellos que lo precisan más;

2. Reformar las condiciones del mercado de pólizas de seguro para que aun los más enfermos entre nosotros puedan tener acceso a un cuidado médico de alta calidad;

3. Evitar que las personas se hundan bajo el peso monetario excesivo de las pólizas de seguro médico que las vuelve, en todo caso, inaccesibles;

4. Incluir medidas de límite de costo y establecer un límite al costo total que una persona tenga que pagar, así como a los pagos mensuales de seguro y los pagos de visita al doctor (co-payments).

Nothing short of a Single Payer Health Care-Medicare for All Plan will suffice. Bear in mind, insurance/drug companies have enormous influence and power both in Washington and in most state legislatures. The electoral process is also privatized. Insurance/pharmaceutical industries pay a lot of money to candidates. For example, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan research group- insurance industry contributed $525,188 to H. Clinton, $414,863 to Obama, and $274,724 to McCain. Obama has gotten $181,000 in Big Pharma donations through Jan. 31, compared with Clinton's $174,00,and McCain received $44,000, according to the center. As a consequence, none of the candidates are calling for a publicly funded Single Payer Health Care Plan. In a Single payer, the government, instead of insurance companies, negotiates with providers- physicians, nurses, hospitals, etc.- for the provision of health care. Medicare is an example of this system which we already have, with an administrative overhead of only 4%, compared with the 30% in the profit driven insurance system. By eliminating the wasteful and huge administrative expenses, we could provide comprehensive, high-quality health care for everyone without spending an extra cent. None of the leading presidential candidates have been pushing for a Single Payer Health Care Plan, and the proposals they have offered thus far fall far short of what Americans need and deserve. The candidates should be asking for government mandates, rather than individual mandates- to provide health care for everyone- from cradle to grave- as an entitlement.

THE TIME IS NOW!!! When hard working Citizens of the US of ALL AGES, are excluded from being cared for by a Doctor when needed because the COSTS are too high, we MUST wonder what happened to Decency and ethics! It is a CRIME the government allows to be committed upon it's own people. It's disgusting and barbaric and when I think of how hard I worked to get a Masters degree, and to help people in social work, yet I can't get coverage in between jobs when I'm sick as a dog...I feel as though that's all the government thinks I am, a dog. In fact, people, ANIMALS, whom I advocate for and love, are treated better than most people in this country. CHANGE IS NOW!!

We must have universal health care for all citizens. We must eliminate the health insurance industry and the big pharmaceutical companies once and for all. In their place we must enact a system along the lines of Canada, the United Kingdom, France, the Scandinavian countries, Japan, Australia, and the other advanced nations who have free, universal healthcare for their citizens. End the corporate greed now, and common sense must take root here in the United States.
