Help Florida become more Equal!

Quite a few states and nations over the past 10 years have passed forms of equality for its LGBT community. In 2008, the Florida legislature passed the DOMA (Defense of Marriage) law and made it illegal for gays and lesbians to marry. In 2010, Florida declared its ban on Gay and Lesbian adoptions unconstitutional. The right move to do is to destroy the DOMA law, which is hurting thousands of gays and lesbians in Florida. Then, we could finally move forward and install some form of equality first, such as Civil Unions to provide legal protection for these couples. Civil Unions provide the same rights and benefits as marriage, though eventually Gay Marriage must be passed so that we, as citizens can't limit others based on sexual orientation alone.  We've all heard gay marriage opponents say giving same-sex partners the same rights as heterosexual couples destroys family values and the sanctity of tradition. Of course, beliefs in general are subjective and cannot dictate rules and laws, just like religion cannot dictate laws. One day, Gay Marriage will be passed, but one step at a time is required.
We the undersigned,
In the past 10 years, many states and even nations have made great strides for the LGBT community. In 2008, the Florida legislature passed the DOMA (Defense of Marriage) law and made it illegal for gays and lesbians to marry. In 2010, Florida declared its ban on Gay and Lesbian adoptions unconstitutional. The right decision to make is to destroy the DOMA law, which is hurting thousands of gays and lesbians as well as straight couples in Florida. Then, we could finally move forward and install some form of equality first, such as Civil Unions to provide legal protection for these couples.

A note worth mentioning, that the U.S government said recently that they would stop not recognizing civil unions and gay marriages. This could mean DOMA could possibly fade away in Florida.

Civil Unions provide the same rights and benefits as marriage, though eventually Gay Marriage must be passed so that we, as citizens can't limit others based on sexual orientation alone. There are economical benefits to pass a Civil Union law and to retract the DOMA law.

First off, gay and lesbian couples entering into a Civil Union will have to purchase a civil union certificate, which in turn means hundreds of thousands of dollars to the State in revenue. Also, LGBT tourism would increase, so that means more revenue for the state and its tourism industry.

The LGBT community and Florida citizens in general need this so we can overcome the inequality of DOMA.
We can also overcome the financial burden in this economic crisis at hand. We sincerely thank you for your time in considering our points and hope that you will make the right decision.
