Ofcom has today ruled that a British television and radio presenter was not being homophobic when he suggested that a boy using a pink mp3 player might grow up gay and should therefore be put up for adoption. On the face of it, you may think this is trivial. And it is, the presenter apologised and made he clear he shouldn't have said those things.
However, complaints were made and it's Ofcom's duty to 'rule' on these matters. It decided that it was a joke. One of the main reasons for claiming it was a joke is that a member of the production team could be heard laughing. We the undersigned don't believe that homophobia is a joke and we believe that Ofcom should take more seriously its duty to protect vulnerable people from discrimination. The vulnerable people in question here are gay or sexually confused teenagers who already fearful of a negative reaction to their sexuality have had a message re-inforced that such a 'joke' need not be taken seriously. There are other examples of Ofcom's blind eye to homophobia; be it overt or implied and rarely does it take a stance that is equal to any similar 'jokes' of a racist nature. Ofcom has very clearly set out Equality Policies for race, gender and disability and by signing this petition you are calling on Ofcom to establish such a policy that covers Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people, with actions to support that Ofcom fully understands the impact of the decisions it makes on these matters.

We the undersigned believe that Ofcom is failing in its duty to respond appropriately to allegations of homophobia. In recent months Ofcom has given many rulings that apparently write-off homophobic comments as 'jokes'. Ofcom has clearly set out Equality Schemes for race, gender and disability but nothing set out for sexual orientation. Those people petitioning invite you to formulate such a policy with relevant stakeholders from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community to ensure that Ofcom is fully aware of the impact that its rulings have on this section of society. Many thanks for the time taken to read this letter and petition.
We signed the "Homophobia isn't funny, it's deadly" petition!

Homophobia and heterosexism are deadly in how they impact health outcomes. Good public health policy must include "defanging" the homophobes.

I am a straight man who is sick of hearing homosexual men being put down and made fun of because of who they are. We must get rid of homophobia.

Homophobia is NO laughing matter. There are enough homophobic people in the United Kingdom and by hearing a popular personality like mr. Ross making homophobic comments, this will only encourage more people to use homopohobic behaviour. Ofcom have proved themselves to be complete idiots and they have lost every ounce of the little respect they had.

I thought Britain was a civilized country! Gay teens form the highest percentage of teen suicides. Actions like yours drive them there. FOR SHAME!! Sexuality is not something that is meant to be laughed at, particularly when one's sexuality is confusing or puzzling to them. How typical of straight men to pigeon hole someone based on a colour they have chosen. I see many straight men wearing pink shirts. Is that a joke. Should one laugh at that? I say fire this presenter and the asshole who thought it was so amusing!
