Japan defies ban on tuna fishing.

March 5, 2010:

The Japanese government and commercial fishing industry's ongoing opposition to the worldwide multi-nation moratorium on whaling and now Bluefin tuna fishing has reached the point of absurdity. Now the Japanese government and fishing industry are saying that they will not comply with the upcoming restrictions/bans on Bluefin Tuna fishing worldwide, even though Bluefin Tuna are now one of the most overfished fish species on earth with populations down 80% worldwide.

The nation of Japan has 2,734 dams on it's 213 major river systems which has led to the extinction of numerous wild Pacific salmon species and multiple other anadromous game fish species which must swim up rivers from the Pacific Ocean to spawn (lay eggs/reproduce) and now can't do so because of Japan's love of river eco-system destroying dams.

These dams block the flow of fresh river water to coastal waters which disrupts/changes coastal water temperatures. Coastal fish, coral and other marine life can only live/thrive in a certain range of water temperatures.

Dam blockages of rivers that flow into the oceans disrupts coastal water temperatures, killing marine life.

Salmon and other anadromous fish that were once some of the most common game fish species in Japan and the world are now nearly completely extinct in the wild in Japan as well as in China, Europe, the Atlantic coast of the U.S. and now the Pacific coast of the United States because of dams, pollution and overfishing etc.

Most of the life in the world's oceans is in the coastal waters, as you go further away from the coastal areas the oceans become much like deserts devoid of significant life.

I recently watched the documentary "The Cove" which documents the yearly slaughter of thousands of dolphins in the Japanese town of Taiji in Japan and the fisherman there were stating that it was good for them to kill the whales and dolphins in Taiji and around the world because they eat fish!!! Yet the Japanese government and fishing industry are now clearing out the world's oceans to profit on the worldwide sushi craze. Is it ok for dolphins and whales to live and eat? or should whales and dolphins just go swim off somewhere and die now so that Japan can continue to reap enormous profits on the worldwide mania for sushi.

Overfishing and dam building by Japan, China and other nations of the world is killing the world's river and coastal fisheries and the marine mammals that feed on these fish. We will all pay for this recklessness as well as the thousands of species of mammals, marine mammals, birds, sharks, eagles, bears, crocodiles, alligators, other reptiles and other fish & animals which feed on river/ocean fish.

The United States has now begun to remove dams because of the massive destruction that has been done to the lower 48 state river/coastal fisheries and eco-systems.

There is enough fish for the people and the animals if we manage these resources wisely and remove dams which have driven countless species of salmon and anadromous fish to extinction around the world by blocking fish spawning grounds.

The fish removed from the world's dinner table over the last 50 years by this eco-destruction easily numbers in the billions.

And to the fishing industry and government of Japan it should be stated, for the record, that dolphins and whales are not fish but highly intelligent mammals with brains that are extremely large and complexed. The size and extreme complexity of their brains and behaviors cause many scientists worldwide to speculate that their intelligence may approach human intelligence in many ways.

The nation of China is now building or planning to build 214 large dam and mega-dams in various countries around the world in the coming days, months and years.

These dams will be some of the largest dams ever built on earth, destroying some of the largest, most species diverse tropical rivers on earth and the coastal ocean waters they flow into.

They are particuliarly focused on building dams in Africa and southeast Asia.

We the undersigned request that Japan comply with the upcoming multi-nation restrictions/bans on Bluefin tuna worldwide. Ongoing scientific studies of Bluefin Tuna reveals that their populations have been reduced by 80% by abusive and reckless overfishing.

Although I drive a Honda this may change in the future.
