Johns Hopkins Supports Taser Use

Johns Hopkins Supports Taser Use

Target:
Johns Hopkins Hospital
Sponsored by:
UPDATE March '08
Victim of the Week:  Darryl Turner,17 years old, Charlotte, NC.

"Family and friends of Darryl Turner, the teen who died after police used a Taser on him when he was allegedly being uncooperative, gathered at Temple Church International."

UPDATE March '08
Victim of the Week: Chris Jackson, 37 years old,Clay, NY.

"When Jackson was handcuffed after being stunned by the Taser, police noticed he was not responding to their questions, and requested medical assistance. Paramedics began assessing Jackson, who went into cardiac arrest and was given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation en route to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead."

At least 300 people have died after being hit by Tasers.

The United Nations considers Taser use "a form of torture."

Amnesty International has called for a moratorium on their use, saying "A taser victim's penalty should not be death."  Taser International is the subject of numerous lawsuits and fraud investigations. Bernard Kerik, Rudy Giuliani's former partner who was recently indicted for fraud, made millions as a member of the Taser International board of directors.

Yet Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore acts as a paid adviser to this scandal-plagued company: "Dr. Hugh Calkins, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Arrhythmia Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, concluded,'I have had an opportunity to review the studies and the results of the studies confirm the general safety of the TASER devices..." (from a securities fraud lawsuit filed in Arizona) http://www.glancylaw.com/pdf/TASER.pdf

Dr. Calkins' assertions that Tasers are safe despite more than 300 Taser related deaths and the UN declaration that it is a torture device provide  Taser International with a veneer of legitimacy.

Physicians should not be involved in executions or torture.

We the undersigned call on Johns Hopkins Hospital to disassociate itself from Taser International and  to return any monies received for endorsing the weapon.

Dr. Miller,

We the undersigned call on Johns Hopkins Hospital to disassociate itself from Taser International and  to return any monies received for endorsing the weapon.

At least 300 people have died after being hit by Tasers. The United Nations considers Taser use "a form of torture." Amnesty International has called for a moratorium on their use, saying "A taser victim's penalty should not be death."  Taser International is the subject of numerous lawsuits and fraud investiagtions.

Yet Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore acts as a paid adviser to the company: "Dr.

Dr. Calkins assertions that Tasers are safe despite more than 300 Taser related deaths and the UN declaration that it is a torture device provides legitimate cover to Taser International.

Physicians should not be involved in executions or torture.

Thank you for attention to this matter.

There needs to be a ban on tassers since tassers have taken lives, are extremely degrading and dangerous, and some police DO NOT have the God given sense or brains when tassers should be used. I use to respect police and their service to society, now I just FEAR them! I have a heart condition since my heart skips beats and have to take medication to control it and also severe spinal atrophy and arthritis. I would never be rude, or ignorant to a police officer, but GOD help me if I ever do have dealings with the police for what-ever-reason and I don't answer or respond quick enough to suit them, or I am emotionally distraught for what ever reason. I'm possibly DEAD if I get tassered. Granted, some people become out of control and can be dangerous and then, and only then should excessive force ever be used. It seems the majority of police are relying on these tassers for any and every given reason to use tassers to subdue a person. How do the police know when a person has a pace maker in their chest, epilepsy, heart conditions, or any other multitudes of medical conditions where the use of a tasser will KILL. And the worst part, it seems the majority of officers don't give a darn or have the discretion when tassers should be deployed or just their get kicks out of using them. Are police trying to use them to enforce behavior modification for the general populace whom they come in contact with? Or do police get sick gratification from seeing people writhing and screaming in pain on the ground? Are the police too lazy anymore to physically restrain a person? And the worst part, the general populace can buy these tassers to use on whomever. How many police officers wearing badges are walking around who are mean, rude, and have evil arrogant sadistic tendencies who should never be police officers in the first place who have the right under the legal jurisdiction to use these tassers when they deem appropriate for use on adults or children? Perhaps if the police are burned out with their jobs they need to seek a different occupation. Tassers need to be banned ! People are NOT CATTLE!

It seems that some cops enjoy abusing these weapons. Until all of the psychos can be screened out of the police these weapons should be banned.

I was INCREDIBLY APPALED AND INFURIATED to find out that my father returned home from his Birthday, Trip to Orlando, Florida Severely beaten up and tasered. Now this isn't the common story involving police, No this story involves three criminals who decided to pick my father to Taser twice, once on top of his head and once on the side of his head leaving huge scabs, Beat, Remove all of his clothes, Then held him a gunpoint before taking him to an ATM and having him give up his pin numbers so they could drain his accounts before my dad escaped. The sad part of all of this is that, its one thing when POLICE miss use these horrible weapons, but when GANGSTERS who have no training or sense to them at all go ahead and use them innocent humans to steal all their money abuse and humiliate grown men it makes me LIVID!!!!!! Oh wait and lets not forget the fact that after my dad talked to the police THEY DIDN'T DO UP A POLICE REPORT however the police when my dad described the men that did this to him KNEW WHO THEY WERE!!!!! Then the police actually had the audasity to tell my dad how lucky he was to have survived this because these guys were known criminals who normaly after kidnapping there victims throw then in the sleogh FOR THE CROCODILES TO DISPOSE OF THEIR BODIES!!!!!!!!!!!! No wonder the police didn't want to do a report it was probably one of their tasers not to mention, how terrible it would sound to other tourists wanting to visit the Beautiful Sunshine State that a man was nearly killed by a group of gangsters while simply enjoying his vacation for his birthday!!!! Thats all i have to say about this matter, and i don't appologize for the tone my blood is still boiling over this one, he just got home a week ago!!!!!!!!!! One last thing... when you think of your loved ones going on vacation somewhere you think, the only bad things that might or could unfortunately possibly happen is maybe a chance their plane could crash, or maybe they get sick while gone, YOU DON'T THINK OH MAYBE THEY WILL GET TASERED, BEATEN, ROBBED AT GUNPOINT, FORCED TO UNDRESS, AND HUMILIATED!!! FOR ABSOULTELY NO REASON

Tasers should be banned from law enforcement use. There are too many deaths occurring after the use of this "weapon". And, police officers are using it way too much, as their choice to subdue someone. What are the other options, to subdue someone, I do not know. However, when a police officer has the right to use this "weapon", not knowing how someone's body would react to it, there is this potential of "murder".

Taser use may be 'safe' but not if the police decide recklessly use them in every instance, instead of going to a little extra effort to deal with a situation in a calm, professional manner, without resorting to use of violent weapons, of which a taser is certainly one.
