Keep the National Guard in NOLA!

Keep the National Guard in NOLA!

Target:
Gov. Bobby Jindal

We are asking that the Louisiana National Guard remain in New Orleans until the following goals are achieved:

1.  NOPD sub stations are rebuilt and restaffed in all the storm-affected areas of the city.

2.  The number of NOPD officers reaches pre-storm levels.

3.  FBI crime statistics show a decrease in violent crime rates.

Residents, volunteers and visitors to the city of New Orleans request your immediate attention to an urgent matter.

Crime rates across the city have skyrocketed since Hurricane Katrina. According to a Tulane University demographer, the murder rate has spiked by at least 34 percent since 2004, while assaults have surged by a whopping 53 percent and burglaries by 63 percent. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Police Department continues to struggle to recruit and maintain officers. This police shortage makes NOPD patrols in the storm-affected areas, especially in the Lower Ninth Ward and eastern New Orleans, nearly non-existent. It also pushes response times to 911 calls to an hour or more.

This is not acceptable.

After investing our time, money and heart into our homes and communities, this atmosphere of fear and abandonment inhibits the recovery our cherished city. As bad as crime is now, we can not imagine how much worse the situation will become if the Louisiana National Guard begins a phased pull out of New Orleans in June, as scheduled. Not only do we fear the chaos that surely will reign in the sparsely populated areas of the city, but we recognize that NOPD officers will be pulled from other, more populated areas to replace the guard patrols. This scenario would place all residents in even greater danger.

Therefore, we implore you to extend the stay of the Louisiana National Guard in New Orleans until the following goals are achieved:

1.  NOPD sub stations are rebuilt and restaffed in all the storm-affected areas of the city.

2.  The number of NOPD officers reaches pre-storm levels.

3.  FBI crime statistics show a decrease in violent crime rates.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

I don't live in New Orleans but i love your wonderful city. The National Guard is supposed to protect and serve here in the states--not overseas. New Orleans needs the guard to stay till things are better and people feel safe.

Have the national guard do something worthwhile rather than sending them across the ocean.

Dear Gov. Jindal, I have heard you speak at a college commencement and at Tech Council meetings shortly after Katrina. I know that you are committed to the citizens of this state. In that light, I would ask that you keep the Guard in NOLA. A recent visit to the French Quarter invoked feelings of unrest...there were barely any law enforcement officers. We have too few and they are overworked. I am afraid that withdrawing the Guard will be much like taking out the stitches 3 days after a massive cut. Safety calls for their presence. Thank you for your consideration. GS

Dear Gov. Jindal, My brother in law is an NOPD officer who works incessantly with no relief in sight. Crime has infested my brother's once safe uptown neighborhood. Orleans Parish is in great need of the Guard and cannot afford to lose them. Please, do not turn away from those who still strive to forge it in to a place surpassing the one before Katrina. Kind Regards, Stephanie Summers

The protection afforded by the New Orleans Police Department is not sufficient to respond to the increase of criminal activity which has followed the Hurricane Katrina disaster. National Guard presence is necessary in the absence of pre-Katrina levels of law enforcement.

Please let the National Guard remain in our city of New Orleans for longer time. There are many criminals in the streets and not too many policemen, we, the citizen of this city need more protection. Thank you for looking into it and helping us.

I have been here in Gentilly through Katrina, and still. The National Guard has been the sole thing that keeps me here and safe. The thugs are waiting from them to pull out and pillage as they did the night of Katrina and until the National Guard got here. I am a single female with two dobermans and if they would leave now, I would fear for my life in this city. We are all still going through so much post traumatic stress that I'm just now feeling like I can leave the house without worring if my dogs are going to be shot by the time I come home. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OUR SECURITY FROM US. WE NEED THEM MORE THAN THE IRAQIS. THIS IS STILL AMERICA ISN'T IT. OR MAYBE IT ISN'T.

The National Guard is definitely needed in the Gentilly area. There are still lots of abandoned houses and NOPD appears to be non-existent.

we are experiencing an uptick in crime in the city, especially in certain areas...nopd cannot handle the demands of such a crime wave in its present form...it is imperative that the nat'l. guard continue in its supportive role here in the city. please consider this request seriously, as the fate of the city is inextricably linked to residents' safety.

I live in the st roch neighborhood, which is trying its best to come back, but there are still abandoned homes, and all kinds of riff raff keeping things pretty dangerous. I would hate to see all this work done for nothing, and NOPD is still overworked... Please keep the guard.

The National Guard has been doing a good job and we need to keep them as long as it takes in neighborhoods with sparce return populations. Thank you!
