Tegucigalpa, D.C.
Dear Sirs,
We the undersigned, respectfully request and strongly urge you upon receipt of the bill (anteroyecto de ley) "Ley Especial de las Areas Protegidas de Islas de la Bahia" , which will be sponsored by the Honorable Jerry Hynds, our Bay Islands Congress representative; be admitted, accepted and approved expediently. This has been a lengthy process and will require immediate action from your office.
The Bay Islands System of Protected Areas includes important terrestrial and marine ecosystems of local, national, regional and international importance. Honduras has signed important international biodiversity agreements for the protection of plants and wildlife and the barrier reef in our marine protected areas are integral part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef Systems, which extends from Yucatan Mexico all the way to the Honduran Bay Islands. As you know this is the second largest reef system hosting a rich biodiversity, currently under numerous human related and other threats.
This permanent protection status will contribute to the consolidation, strengthen and sustainability of these important protected areas, thus contributing to the overall benefit of our communities and islands as well.
As concerned citizen and as your constituents as well, we have been striving for quite a while in the construction of a healthy society through our local conservation efforts. Today we need and request your help and understanding and therefore urge you to consider our petition.
Thank you for taking the time to consider our request and comments and we eagerly await your favorable response.
