Maintenance Problems in Our Department!

Maintenance Problems in Our Department!

Target:
To get maintenance and new carpet for the University Theatre Box Office
On February 27 of 2009, the University Theatre Box Office bathroom flooded with sewage water. The sewage rose up to ankle hieght, and the carpet was exposed to it for more than three hours. The University only suggested a carpet treatment, however overexposure to the sewage has completely ruined it, and may leave unsighlty spots, as well as, cause an array of health effects like diarriah, hepititus, and many other unexplained viruses.
Previously on Saturday, February 7th, the entire basement of the Arts and Communication building flooded when a water pipe burst. A group of Theatre and Dance students took the time to help remove costumes, clean up the water, and reverse the damage done to our department. The University refuses to take proper action, or at the very least, keep our water/sewage system up to date.
We students must make our frustations known to the University, and stop this before it happens to other departments around campus.

Ball State University Representitives,

We the undersigned wish that action be made to keep our building's water/sewage system, up to date. On three seperate occasions our department has been flooded due to pipes bursting and a sewage clog. We only ask that these situations are monitored and taken care of in an appropriate fashion.
We sincerely care about our craft, and work hard to push the boundries of art exploration. Please help us to continue our work and help our department reflect this caring, progressive environment to the academic world.

Hopefully this petition will help not only bring attention to the Theatre Dept, but every other "older" facility on campus that needs to be attended to, before they run into the same problems.

Everyone in our department puts in a lot of time and effort to make our building nice and clean. Our parents, and some students, make their contribution by paying for us to go to this school and to be in this department. So please, from all of us in the Department of Theatre and Dance at BSU, fix our problem.

This is not the only problem the University has had recently with flooding. It's getting a bit ridiculous.

Please fix this unhealthy problem. I figure for the 20,000 plus dollars a year my daughter spends to go to this college the least they can do is provide a healthy environment.

My parents pay a great amount of money for me to come here to further my education. When I told them about the situation going on they were not very happy to hear that my health was not a concern to the University. All the university needs to do is support all the departments in the School and not just the sports. They teach us to treat everyone equal. So how come a lot of departments dont get any help when they need it?

I am not Theatre or Dance Major, I just feel it is outrageous this situation has not ben handled appropriately. I am disappointed in BSU's unfair treatment of it's students and the failing facilities provided to the Theatre and Dance Department.

Every department on the University campus should be properly taken care of. People are devoting their careers to this program, so their efforts should not be in vain.

If the school is willing to allow this to keep happening then they don't care about their students. The fact that they are willing to risk their health is not right and they need to take care of this problem ASAP.

It is disturbing how so much money is spent on advertising sporting events... so many shirts, fliers, memorabilia... cut this into thirds, and give some to the Theatre and Dance Department. It would more than take care of the issue at hand. Sports are not the only University offering that should be bragged over, support all of your students... not just the ones that happen to be good at throwing things.

As the mother of a Ball State student, I am very concerned about the lack of interest the University has shown the Theatre Department. I pay a large amount of money and time into my son's education, and hope that Ball State does the same for it's buildings.

Mold, bacteria, viruses, parasites and various other harmful things live in sewage and warm wet areas. Keeping plumbing up to date reduces accidents like this and the spread of infections. Indoor plumbing is a fabulous invention but only if it works correctly. Additionally, spending a little money now on upkeep reduces the amount of money spent again and again for clean-up and repairs.

It is incumbent on the University to not only repair what was damaged, but to keep the water/sewage system well maintenance. This was not the fault of the department and it is unreasonable that they should suffer for it. It is the University responsibility to provide faculty and students with a safe, clean environment. Instead those who work in the Arts and Communications building are at risk to a variety of health risks, some of which could have lasting effects. For those who run this university, if saving money is more important than the health and safety of your workers and student you may wish to rethink your choice of profession and your competence in the field.
