Make the Kennel Club change their breed standards.

Target:
The Kennel Club (UK)
Sponsored by:
A recent television programme on the BBC exposed the harsh realities of today's pedigree breeds. The breed specifications which are set by the Kennel Club need changing to stop such extreme and unhealthy dogs from being bred.

For example, according to the Kennel Club, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is supposed to have the characteristic ridge on their back which gives them their name, however one in ten Rhodesians are born without it, many puppies being culled for having no ridge, the ironic part being that the ridge is actually caused by a deformation of the spine, so the ridgeless ones are actually healthier.

We believe we should not interfere with dog breeding as it puts pressure on dogs to breeed to staisfy our fashion & financial gains rather than their welfare needs.

This exposure of greedy breeders was horrifying. They are definitely not dog lovers and there must be more control to stop this suffering.

the kennel club should now have breeders have a certificate from there vets stating all breeding dogs and bitiches are clear of all unhealthy conditions. this is the only way forward. they the kc must now change there breed standards. a good breeder should ensure this after all it is not only the dogs that suffer, the new owners have the upset of purchasing a puppy that they thought was sound and then a short while later having the heartbreak of there pup becoming ill. in my opinion, a breeder that sells a puppy that is kc registration, knowing that that puppy may carry an illness that may show up sooner rather than later, are in the same league as the so called puppy farmers who have no concern for the puppys they breed, as the are only in it for the money. not the welfare of their dogs..

I viewed this programme with absolute horror. These standards have made cripples of a huge number of breeds because somebody with a screw loose thinks they look better! This causes animals pain and costs huge amounts in vet fees. MAD!

maybe the so called scientist/breeders should do to themselves what they are doing to the dogs!!!!

I strongly disagree with the many of the current practices relating to pedigree dog breeding. It is distressing in the extreme to see any animal suffering purely because it meets the requirement of the dog kennel standard for that breed. I particularly would like to see the practice of culling animals because they do not fit the standard to be stopped.

If some of the breeds they showed on TV were humans, they would be classified as disabled. Why do it to animals??

As a German Shepherd owner, I am well aware of the breeding problems that these dogs have. I will not support breeding any longer. I was living in ignorance, but I realize now the awful truth about breeding dogs. Unfortunately, the dog is always the one to pay the ultimate price whether it be from a deformaty from breeding, or from being without a home and sentenced to death because of that. Listen!!! The dog population is already out of whack! Why are we allowing so many more to be bred into existence? My GOD! The sad truth is that most of them will end up being neglected, or even worse yet, end up in a shelter and be killed. We humans need to realize that we simply cannot continue to breed dogs simply because we have a penchant for them or we like how they look. We need to wake up and realize that a very huge portion of these dogs that are bred for our entertainment wind up in shelters and killed ruthlessly! Come on people, have compassion! Why not adopt a needy dog from a shelter? I guarentee you that many pure bred dogs are there waiting and hoping to be adopted into loving homes. I assure you that the next dog I get will be a shelter dog. On behalf of the animals. Melissa MacDonald

This breeding practice MUST be outlawed. PRORITY must be given to the health and welfare of all these puppies instead of £££££££.

I also watched the tv programme.as a dog lover and owner, i was upset any angry at how deformities in certain breeds were being deliberately bred. I was also shocked to find that healthy puppies were being put down, when the deformity was missing. I think the kennel Club should rethink it's standards for the sake of individual breeds. if this doesn't change, i will no longer support the kennel club or register any further puppies I buy.

I am a Council Licensed dog breeder, our kennel goes back to the 1950's. We have always stood by anything we have ever bred. We health check all breeding stock as a matter of course. I would never have realised that so many so called 'top' kennels weren't doing so and acting on any unfavourable results. We have stuck as closely as possible to the original type from whence we started, I know full well that our dogs would not make a final line up in a show, the breeds have changed such in the time. I have found it increasingly difficult to find like stock to breed with. The 'old fashioned' types are dwindling now a days. Something needs to be done before many breeds totally loose what they WERE and SHOULD BE. Dogs were bred for different jobs, they should be physically able to still do them. I have even had our German Shepherds working as gun dogs! I have had a stud dog owner telephone up to ask if I bred a very peculiar bitch that his dog HAD recently covered. The bitch was NOT the one for the Kennel Club registration certificate, it was the wrong colour for starters. The papers had been taken for an unregistered bitch and a litter was registered shortly afterwards with the Kennel Club! Several attempts were made to stop he litter being registered and no response was given by the Kennel Club until sometime after the litter was registered. Their response- 'the application form was all filled in correctly'. They couldn't care that it was not the correct papers for the bitch just the paperwork was filled in! I have had a gut full of the Kennel Club. It is fast becoming a farse. They have never cared about the dogs just their fees. A self proclaimed expert on EVERYTHING canine.

These practices used to keep the characteristics of dogs amount to cruelty to animals and should be stopped!

I'm disgusted by the sick, twisted abuse of dogs encouraged and even specified by the Kennel Club. This organisation should be disbanded and breeders prosecuted for animal abuse.
