To: The Federal Government of NigeriaWe present this petition to the federal government of Nigeria as sons and daughters of Nigeria who are willing to contribute to the development of our nation. Though away in foreign lands, we want to be involved in building a democratic environment to sustain the dreams of our motherland. We are presenting this petition to vote because:
1. It is our constitutional right to vote
2. We are responding to several invitations from the Nigerian government to help develop our nation
3. The vote of the millions of Nigerians living abroad will make a difference
4. It will create an equal opportunity and sense of responsibility for our emerging generation all over the world
5. It is technologically feasible
6. Nigeria will be a leading example to other nations
7. This provision will enhance and strengthen the Nigerian democracy
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, urge the President, the National Assembly, and the House of Representatives to act now to create a provision to allow us register and cast our votes from our countries of residence in all subsequent Federal, State, and Local government elections.Sincerely,
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Very soon, the leadership of our nation will fall squarely on the shoulders of our generation. If we are not prepared for it and have not leveled the playing field enough to encourage good men and women to run for office we will be no better than the generations before us. I am among a group of a new breed of Nigerians seeking this change. We are seeking peaceful, non violent and lawful ways to bring about this change. we are not disillusioned to assume this can be achieved easily considering the current state of affairs. Not to begin however will be far more catastrophic for our children.
We have come to the conclusion that 2011 can be a game changer in our country if we plan well. I have dwelt on this for years and in the last few months i have come across great patriots who are willing to give up everything for this purpose. it is not an anti government struggle. it is not a political group rather we are positioning ourselves midway between the government and the activists. We want to be a voice for the people and we want to help the government achieve all they keep promising.
We decided that we will seek voting rights for Nigerians in Diaspora as a way to get those outside interested once again in the polity. On the local side we will work with every group possible to ensure Nigeria has the greatest election in 2011. We want electronic voting machines. We want surveillance cameras at polling stations; we want our religious leaders to help motivate their people to volunteer freely to man the polling booths across the country. we want everyone to go out in 2011 to vote. We need to send a message to our leadership that true power lies with the people so that they can come seek our votes with meaningful programs and answers to our problems. To achieve this we have to maintain neutrality and zero party affiliation. We must stay in the middle.
This is an appeal to you to sign this Diaspora petition. We seek the signature of 1 million Nigerians both in Diaspora and at home to support our petition to have Nigerians in Diaspora vote where they reside and have those votes counted in 2011. it is estimated that over 30 million Nigerians live outside our shores. These people need to have a voice.
God has given us a tremendous opportunity. The constitutional review will begin shortly. We can%u2019t afford to waste a single day. Now is our time to act to take our country back. Sign this petition and pass it to every Nigerian you know. We are the ones to change our country. God bless Nigeria
