Target:
tbonlarr@co.palm-beach.fl.us

Please sign the following petition to end the auctioning of exotic birds and animals.  This practice must come to an end.  No animal should be sold to the highest bidder.  Exotic bird and animal owners should be screened, educated and licensed prior to being able to possess exotic animals.  Auctions only benefit the seller and has no benefits for the animals.

We the undersigned are asking that you ban future auctions of exotic birds and animals.  As I am sure you are aware of, exotic birds and animals are being released into the wild every day by uneducated owners who are no longer able to care for these animals.  If we allow auctions like this to go on, we are only contributing to the problem.   Parrots, like any other exotic animal, should not be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  Please help us to stop this outragous act by banning auctions of this kind.   Thank you for your time.

Please stop this cruel practice of animals being auctioned off. They are sentient beings. Birds have been proven to have the intelligence of a 5 year old child and the emotions of a 2 year old child. Dr. Irene Pepperberg has proven this fact with a 30 year study done with Alex an African Grey parrot. Even after Alex's death on Sept. 6, 2007, Dr. Pepperberg continues to do research with other African Greys that prove to be just as intelligent as Alex was. I have 2 cockatiels I have had for 12 years and one for 5 and a half years. They act just like toddlers (human babies). Please stop these cruel auction practices.

I can not believe that in the 21st Century, America is still allowing this kind of horrible practice to continue. It makes me lose faith in America, and mankind in general. Please stop this useless cruelty. The potential owners should be screened so that the animal will be going to a loving home and be well cared for. This practice is ensuring animal suffering, and nothing else. Please have a heart!

If you are thinking about acquiring an exotic bird, please, please, think about it very carefully and educate yourself on the proper care required of the species you are thinking about acquiring. If after your investigation you feel you are able to supply all of the requirements necessary to properly care for one of these beautiful creatures, please look into adopting one from a sanctuary. I believe everyone starts out thinking they would love to have one of these beautiful gifts of nature and that they will always be there for them. Birds needs lots of love and attention and always remember; birds are just two steps away from being wild. In the beginning it may be just you, and then you bring in another, whether it is a spouse, a child or just a friend. Birds do not adapt quickly to any new changes in their environment (people, new furniture, wall art, drapes, paint color, etc.) If these birds are not taught from their infancy to be around lots of others then you have a behavioral issue in the making. Let me tell you about my beautiful baby Booger. He is a twenty year old male Jenday Conure and my daughter bought him when he was six months old. She moved out of our house when he was a year old and it was decided he would be better off with me and not in a new home where no one would be home much. I unfortunately did not educate myself on the care of birds and let him overly bond to me which was a HUGE mistake. I became his mate, letting him ride on my shoulder all of the time, another HUGE mistake. My husband worked nights so Booger and me were alone most of the time. He never bonded with my husband and would tolerate him on a very limited basis. When he was nine years old I brought into our house a rescued parakeet. Booger was never around any other birds once he left the Pet Store. He hated this new rival in his territory and looked at the new addition as a threat for my attention, his mate and even attacked the new intruder through the cage (bit the little parakeets toe). So I had to keep them in separate rooms. Shortly after the parakeets arrival Booger began plucking his feathers which became a habit I was never able to break. The Vet took tests to be sure the plucking was not medical or nutritional. The parakeet passed after being in our home for four years. The Vet said even when the reason a bird plucks is no longer an issue it is much harder to break an emotional habit. About a year ago I became ill and Booger was not getting the attention from me that he was used to and deserved. My illness led to depression which my precious picked up on. Birds are very intuitive. With my spending less time with him, and my being depressed he became depressed and afraid of everything; you see his environment was changing once again. He became very aggressive and starting biting me. The Vet indicated he was most likely trying to protect me from the fear he was feeling from me? I watched my beautiful affectionate bird turn into a frightened aggressive one and he began plucking feathers on his wings which he never did before ( only his legs and chest previously) I never in my life ever imagined not even once that I would EVER give my precious up, but I had to think about him and not me. I read about this wonderful place in Ohio called Wings Over The Rainbow and called and spoke with a wonderful lady named Deborah Shell. She reassured me my feelings about Booger were normal and that yes it was about his happiness and not my happiness at this point. It took me a couple of weeks of continuous crying, which did not help Booger, before I decided that it was time to let my bird be a bird. He has been with Deborah over two months and I am slowing coming to the realization that I did make the right choice in letting him go. Now do not judge me until you have walked in my shoes. Booger seems to be adjusting well to his new home. He is in the free flight area, he never had his wings clipped not even once, and was used to flying all over the house. Deborah did not want to clip his wings unless she was forced to. She worked with him, loved him and watched him adjust quite well with other birds and the free flight area. He has a new bird friend that plays with him, they feed each other and sleep side by side at night, what more could a person ask for? She keeps me informed of his progress so as to ease my pain. So if you think “I would never give up my bird,” please think again and if you can see it in your heart please donate what you can whenever you can because you just might need to give up your bird for very legitimate reasons someday and wouldn’t it be great to have a place like Wings Over The Rainbow that you could count on? This Sanctuary and others like it rely solely on donations from people like me and you. This Sanctuary has helped and is continuing to help birds from all types of situations that were not of their making. Let’s try to save as many of these beautiful creatures (who did not ask to be brought into our homes to begin with) as we can. I am not a Vet or an expert on birds by no means, but just want to express my observations as they relate to my situation.

I am a great fan of parrots and have had the pleasure of being owned by an Umbrella Cockatoo and now by a Timneh African Gray. I have adopted them both when their former families wanted them to have a new home, so I am NOT part of the problem. It is important in our world to provide proper habitat for these beautiful creatures in the wild. There are no native parrots in my neighborhood, but I have an official "Habitat" for the birds that we DO have, with sacrificial plants for the butterflies, too.

Parrots and exotic birds need to be kept in their natural habitat to the greatest extent possible. There are plenty of breeders of birds to go around as pets. Please help protect these precious animals!

Exotic birds should remain exotic that is " OUTSIDE" of our day to day existence. Exotic birds need their true habitat, skies and liberty. Auctions of these peaceful, inspiring, rare and beautiful species are inhumane to the utmost. The resulting life in a cage is ridiculous and their release in the middle of the city is irresponsible. Please ban these auctions!

Parrots should not be auctioned off to the highest bidder! These people are usually uneducated as to a parrots needs and the birds end up being neglected and abused. Help stop the abuse and neglect by not allowing auctions.

I have seen the damage caused by uneducated and uniformed bird owners. These are not dogs and cats, domesticated for centuries. They are wild and exotic animals that have special dietary, intellectual and physical needs!

The widespread abuse and torture of exotics, especially during the act of smuggling them into 'intolerant' jurisdictions, is abhorrent to any human of good and kind nature. I encourage any who use the voice of this petition to heed the message here. End the auction of -all- living creatures. Thank you.
